» Telltale Games shuts down
22-Sep-2018 - 13:13 - by Minty
Telltale Games, the studio behind such beloved games as "The Walking Dead" and "The Wolf Among Us" has reportedly shut down at very short notice. Rumors were rampant that Telltale had laid off all its staff with immediate effect and no severance terms. This rumor has now been corroborated by Telltale themselves in a statement released overnight:

"Today Telltale Games made the difficult decision to begin a majority studio closure following a year marked by insurmountable challenges. A majority of the company's employees were dismissed earlier this morning, with a small group of 25 employees staying on to fulfill the company's obligations to its board and partners."

In the same statement, Telltale's CEO Pete Hawley said, "It's been an incredibly difficult year for Telltale as we worked to set the company on a new course. Unfortunately, we ran out of time trying to get there. We released some of our best content this year and received a tremendous amount of positive feedback, but ultimately, that did not translate to sales. With a heavy heart, we watch our friends leave today to spread our brand of storytelling across the games industry."

The company says it will "issue further comments regarding its product portfolio in the coming weeks
As for the projects that Telltale has in the works, it is believed that the final game in The Walking Dead series will now go unfinished despite the first episode (and the season pass) already being made available for purchase. It is currently unknown as to what will happen for those customers who have paid in advance. The upcoming games "Stranger Things" and "The Wolf Among Us Season 2" have also been canceled. Telltales final project looks to be "Minecraft Story Mode" for Netflix, which is what the remaining 25 staff have been kept on for.

» EA under criminal investigation in Belgium
13-Sep-2018 - 07:59 - by Minty
EA has had what some may call "a bad year". Many of their problems relate to their use of lootboxes and lootbox-like mechanics in their games. It all started with the notorious Star Wars Battlefront 2, which famously was forced to remove its lootboxes from the game after player outrage (and reportedly, Disney stepping in). The whole controversy caused various governmental bodies around the world to start investigating the concept of lootboxes, amid complaints that it was gambling. Almost every country globally decided that lootboxes are not gambling, with the notable exception of Belgium and the Netherlands. As such, lootboxes were declared illegal in those countries.

Since then, EA has been dialing back their usage of lootboxes in all their games, with the notable exception of FIFA which is, financially speaking, their golden goose. While other game developers such as Valve and Blizzard began removing lootboxes from their games (in Belgium and Netherlands only), EA declared that they disagree with the assertion that lootboxes are a form of gambling and didn't change anything about the way FIFA Ultimate Team packs worked in their FIFA games. As a result, it is now widely being reported that EA is under criminal investigation in Belgium by the public prosecutors' office. If they decide to press charges, this could land EA in a lengthy and costly court battle.

More to come on this story as it evolves!
