View Full Version : speed cameras - m4
Some might find this interesting.. from a mailing list.
New electronic signs on the M4 were switched on today. The bad news is
that they are rigged with the SPECS speed cameras. SPECS is a
computer-camera based system. As you go past the next sign your number
plate is read again. The computer 'knows' how far apart the signs are so
it can work out your average speed between the two, or three or four.
The system is fully automatic and will issue a ticket without any form
of human intervention. It does this for every single vehicle that
passes. You will not know whether you've been caught because the cameras
don't flash. The whole section of the M4 between Theale (J12) and
Membury Services(between J14 and J15) is wired, both ways. The system is
set to trigger a ticket at 78 mph. Radar detectors will be of no use as
SPECS is entirely passive, there is no radar or laser beam to detect
Best not speed on the M4 then eh

That's basically the reason I run the 1/4 mile :)
Too many cameras ( & innocent members of the public !!! ) to fart about on public roads these days.
Edit : - Check this out for slae on ebay...

Think I got done today. Didn't notice on the way down the road but on the way back spotted the police camera van sitting there.
Really terrible business though, was a 60 road for about 15 miles, dropped to 40 for about half a mile while some roadworks were going on, then back to 60. Bloody camera van sitting during the 40 bit, something like 300 yards before the 60 sign. Nothing to say it was there. gah.

This is a hoax. I posted this a coupla days back, and made some enquiries on clubgti forum, and on the thames valley police website. Then asked COP to delete it. :) Don't worry! they're only currently active on the new bit of the M60 near Manc!

oops, stupid mail lists
it should stay as a testament to my nick :)
evil milkfloat >;)
I reckon i got done last night.
Theres a stretch on the Hicks Gate roundabout in Brislington, Bristol that used to have a speed camera on, there signs are still there, but theres no camera anymore.
I always take it slow (as in on the speed limit- 50mph) whenever i go past it, but last night i forgot and and crept over 50 to about 58mph.
Didnt see no flash but i just got a funny feeling :(

You are prolly safe... Speed camera's aren't set to the limit exactly, because car speedos are so inaccurate. As a rough guide (the police use it too, for when they follow you to get your speed) is speed limit+10%+2. So you were 1 mph over that limit; chances are you'll be ok.

Yeah I've often been worried that my speedo was inaccurate and that I would get caught speeding when I didn't know I was.
At least, that's what I'd tell the police :E
Seriously, speeding is bad mkay!

so long as there arent any speed cameras to speed out of Wales i dont mind :P

Theres an incredibly easy way to not get caught speeding you know.....
Don't speed.
Either that or move to the Isle of Man

78 is too slow tbh....88 is a more realistic TOO FAST speed in a decent car in good conditions on the M-ways...
but increasing the official speed limit to 80 means people will just go faster
i heard that the police might like to increase this but it's impractical, so just police speeders that take the mick...
Then asked COP to delete it. :)
yup.. all slightly embarrassing really ;)

does anyone actually bother reading posts above the last one? or do they just read the title and post?
I have read the previous posts and cannot see any link to the web site that says the story is false that is why I posted the link. :(
the 70 speed limit was put into place in the late 60's i think, something like that, when an ac cobra was clocked doing 155 :) so with todays cars being so much safer, and stopping so much quicker, 70 mph is far too slow. i don't see why we don't just do the way of Germany and have no speed limit at all, they have the safest motorways in europe.

Is that right?.... Mad!
It is a little low, 70mph. They could 'at least' raise it to 80 now i reckon. I've dreamed of the day I can buy me self a nice fast motor other than me current 1.6, but then I think whats the point as you'll never be able to drive it to its potential. There would be no point for the extra insurance costs. No fun :|
