Was watching a proggy on discovery science i think it was last night, it was about Hypernovas in star nurserys, it was really interesting! But the thing that bugged me was they kept talking about black hole emitting streams of pure energy from the centre of it going in a straight line! but i thought nothing could escape from black holes, even though hawkings has been looking into again, but this proggy was made in 2002! Twas all too confusing, as it was 2 in da morning :P
Well black holes *might* emit stuff. That's the whole problem - theres a few theories about that mean they might do; we just don't have the equipment to recognise the emitted stuff.
The second law of thermodynamics states that the universe tends towards higer entropy (that is, disorder) as time goes on. Black holes go against this law, because (obviously) the singularity at the middle of the black hole is perfect order (as it's just a singularity). What hawking has done (now and in the past) is said that this is eventually released as Hawking radiation as the black hole 'decays'.
If the particle/antiparticle theory is correct it's also possible that there is a particle/antiparticle pair at the event horizon of a black hole. One of them gets sucked into the black hole whilst the other is thrown out into space. That, in a nutshell, is Hawking radiation (http://www.rdrop.com/users/green/school/radiatin.htm).
hth - google stuff if you're not sure :P
as for gamma ray emission...well I don't know :P Anythings possible!

Thing is a black hole is just a big fuck off sun that has imploded into a tiny space, so it must eventually die, i wonder if we will ever see that! Or is it that black holes are infinately self sufficient! Also i just realised i posted this on the completely wrong forum! :P
If they are infinitely self-sufficient then they can do some wacky things....as they can do what they want and not violate the laws of physics ;)

I thought the gamma bursts ocurred just before matter had passed the event horizon, or is my memory wrong?

I think the understanding then of jet streams was that the momentum gained by matter falling into a spinning black hole when it crossed the event horizon at certain angles and velocity, enabled it to escape at the poles where the gravitational forces of the Hole are at their weakest.
I think ??

Yea i said that in my second post! Well seeing as some believe these theories are not provne they may well be classes as Science Fiction! :O
*Murasame is being too smart for his own good, if anyone had any sense they would tell him to STFU! But then again he does make a valid point! Sorry im schitzophrenic

I thought the energy streams were emitted by matter swirling around the outside of the event horizon.
