Could be applying too much of a white knuckle-grip / keeping wrist muscles too tight.
Nah i keep as relaxed as possible , does help but the pain still kicks in

Got lactic acid?
Where do you feel it? Across the thumb to index finger or over the whole hand? I can get it whilst riding sometimes. Basically swollen ligaments and tendens in the hand press up against the median nerve and causes a painful or numb feeling.
You could try wearing gloves with extra padding across the palm especially in the area around the base of the thumb. This should help prevent any pressure. If it becomes serious I believe it's called carpal tunnel syndrome. I would give you hands a couple of days to rest, I'm not sure what your training régime is like.
If it is this (not quite sure because you've said you use a relaxed grip) in the long term you could try some grip strength excercises to add a build more tissue around the tunnel, would probably make it feel a bit worse than better to begin with.

Will try the grip strength excercises never thought about them. Not sure if it is carpal or not , the range of motion i end up doing is similar to that youd get carpal in but it happens more when i havent rowed for a while rather than when ive been doing it for a long time. Its pretty much a cramp feeling all over my hands

What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when tendons or ligaments in the wrist become enlarged, often from inflammation, after being aggravated. The narrowed tunnel of bones and ligaments in the wrist pinches the nerves that reach the fingers and the muscles at the base of the thumb. The first symptoms usually appear at night. Symptoms range from a burning, tingling numbness in the fingers, especially the thumb and the index and middle fingers, to difficulty gripping or making a fist, to dropping things. Some cases of carpal tunnel syndrome are due to work-related cumulative trauma of the wrist. Diseases or conditions that predispose to the development of carpal tunnel syndrome include pregnancy, diabetes, and obesity.
Is there any treatment?
Carpal tunnel syndrome is treated by immobilizing the wrist in a splint to minimize or prevent pressure on the nerves. If that fails, patients are sometimes given anti-inflammatory drugs or injections of cortisone in the wrist to reduce the swelling. There is also a surgical procedure in which doctors can open the wrist and cut the ligament at the bottom of the wrist to relieve the pressure. However, only a small percentage of patients require surgery.
What is the prognosis?
Approximately 1 percent of individuals with carpal tunnel syndrome develop permanent injury. The majority recover completely and can avoid reinjury by changing the way they do repetitive movements, the frequency with which they do the movements, and the amount of time they rest between periods when they perform the movements.
Not too disimilar from what I said ;)
Pretty sure it isnt carpal tunnel , ive had it since i started using the rowing machine , and it gradually takes longer and longer to set in , had a rest of 4 months from them due to the summer and now it only takes a few minutes for my hands to cramp up completely. With carpal itd be more liklely that it would affect me after i had been using them for a while and gradually get worst rather than better.
Very weird, does anything else trigger the pain? As you say doesn't sound like carpal because of the time and the way you're gripping it.
Nope just the rowing machine , dont get it doing any other activity including wanking!
Not a huge problem then if you can still bash one out. Maybe worth visiting a physio?
