..whats that all about then?

it claims its a "special edition" but its cheaper than the standard box

also is it true theres a slightly tweaked version of the ps2 coming out before xmas?

The new version comes in black or silver (maybe other colours??) and its the new design not a limited edition, black comes with a memory card and silver comes with 2 silver joypads. Main difference is the remote control reciever is built in, although you dont get a remote. Oh and its quieter too, so the fans dont drown out the sound from games or DVDs anymore.

so is it possible that a dodgy wee shop in the middle of nowhere could still try and fob me off with some old style ps2 stock or did this all happen so long ago that there's none around anymore?

They are still failry new, entirely possible that shops could have stock of the old type I suppose.

got the black because i saw some comments that the "paint job" wasnt very good and silver peripherals seem to be slightly more expensive and harder to come by

I bought a silver vertion for my two teenage girls for xmass,got pop idoil and a few other games to.
Cant wait for that horrid simon bloke to give em a good bollocking.
When they get fed up with it,I will claim it lol.

The new style black PS/2's are a nightmare to get hold of.

Places such as Dixons/Currys etc have stock of both old and new atm, you can get the old with eye toy, bunch of games and various other gubbins for about a tenner less. You'd spot by the box which is which tho, m8 went to buy an old one and spotted from the box he'd got a new uber quiet model :)
I've not seen many other places still selling the 747 impression model PS/2
