Happy New Year to everyone. Now that our souls have been flooded with large quantities of near poisonous liquid we can look back at an exciting and fruitful 2004.

Just before Christmas we announced our intention to run a series of polls for the community so that they can show their support for favourite games of 2004. A big thank you to those that took time to mail in their suggestions for each category.

Choices for the most innovative game of 2004 are:

Pacman Vs (GameCube)
Half-Life 2 (PC)
Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines (PC)
Far Cry (PC)
Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay (XBOX)
Katamari Damacy (PS2)
Evil Genius (PC)
Doom 3 (PC)

Vampire the Maquerade for teh win! :D

It's got some great dialogue, and basically how you interact and talk to people affects your game and outcome of the game.

And let's not forget you can never have too much breasts sight-seeing either :P

Funny i voted for Vampire the Maquerade i'm up to Hollywood and loving it

No offence to those who voted for HL2 (its a good game) but how the hell can you call a standard run of the mill fps innovative?

The Dark One

Going by the nominations, I assume most are voting for Source engine and the Doom 3 engine, not the game.

Even worse is the fact there sequals (including Bloodlines).

I find it hard to belive that a sequal can be classed as innovative without huge major ground braking changes :P.

How is Bloodlines a sequel?

It's part of the V:TM franchise (WhiteWolf) but it's in no way a sequel. The game/storyline in Bloodlines has very little in common or related to Redemption. Secondly, Bloodlines has dialogue and is a 'proper' RPG, whereas Redemption was hack & slash ;)

Ok maybe sequel was the wrong word. But still my original point is still valid :P.

Its a god damn fantastic game (iirc I think I nominated for best game of 2004). I just dont think its particually innovative.

Depends what you class as innovative - Far Cry Iw ould say has innovative game play FOR A FPS, so its much more innovative than that disappointing crock Hl2. Some might say engine of hl2 is innovative - I disagree. Stick high quality textures and per-pixel shading in quake 3 engine and it will look just as pretty.

i voted for farcry too was compeltley astounded by a game with such a small fanfair, truely fking amazing game :)

only the physics of hl2 would class it as most innovative i feel as they were used properly in game

on a side note: Far Cry is £12.99 in Virgin's new sale.

I'd class HL2 as innovative due to the interaction/physics ingame.. that's due to the Source engine, maybe, but it certianly is a class apart from other games

I am trying to enjoy FarCry I really am.
But nothing has made me think "wow" like HL2 did.
I have only just found the handglider though so probably not very far through it.
Why is it that the enemy requires a stupid amount of shooting before they die??

physics were done 6 years ago in a game called trespasser. The physics stuff is also in truespace but thats not a game.

Matt
01-Jan-2005, 20:22
Lots of games have had physics engines in them before. Without the gravity gun, would you really consider the physics were such an important part of the game? Yeah there are the vehicles etc but lots of things have those.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of any game that's allowed that much interaction with the ingame world. And from the list supplied above, that's why it gets my vote :)

If anybody had actually played Katamari Damacy it would win by miles.

This poll at least shows one thing clearly, innovation is pretty much none existent in PC games but people suck it up anyway. OOhh a FPS never seen that before. :P

to be honest its a bad list, or badly worded list. How about Trackmania? City Of Heroes or Full Spectrum Warrior? They all added to their genre or were differnt enough.

I agree HL2 used lots of things well and is up there for me as well.

You are interested in some bizarre and different types of game, that's cool. But you need to accept that you are in the minority.

Allthough how any FPS would be the most "innovative game" in 2004 I'll never know, so I totally agree with you on that one :p

Matt

Just because its an fps doesn't mean it cant be innovative. Look at the system shock series for example.

Its a shame, because I think that bloodlines should win that one hands down, as quite frankly its produced one of the few FPS/RPG hybrids out there, the only other I can think of is system shock, but even that doesn't have the level of "free-will" in it that Bloodlines has, for instance, like Drkwoman said, you conversation trees lead to something bigger than what you would normally expect in a game of this type, and your actions have a real effect on the game world.

In my eyes it raises the bar for RPGs, both 1st-person and the more classical style.

I doubt many people have played it though, and that’s why Half-Life 2 is doing so well, I would assure you that you would vote for Bloodlines had you played it… Probably :P

Ahh biut its not about being interested - you don't have to have a taste for that type of game to acknowledge that its doing something innovative.

TBH the games I've had most enjoyment out of during the year have been IWD2, SI, Warlords 2 and HoMM3. All quite old games. Played a bit of HL2 but it's not that great.

The only innovative game in this list is Katamari Damacy - the rest are 'same old same old'.

I think Far Cry was more fun than Half Life 2. Possibly more innovative too, as it was the first FPS to utilise the new Graphics Card techniques. For innovation though, you can't beat Zoo Keeper (http://www.trickery.net/vb/arcade.php?do=play&gameid=35). :/

Evil Genius

CooK1E
04-Jan-2005, 16:55
Have to agree with munk - in that list (from the games that ive played) Evil genius seems to be the only one with some innovation.

Although yes hl2 and farcry were very good - they didnt exactly turn the genre on its head, just improved it slightly :)

munk

my thinking exactly Cook1e :)

evil genius though really is just dungeon keeper with different newer graphics and a new name. Its not really that much innovation. Personally I found evil genius to be a disappointment :( I was really looking forward to it and preordered it and played the demo to death but the full game was jsut too long and drawn out to make it interesting.

You 2 never played Dungeon Keeper?

Bloodlines gets my vote, if you've played it you'll understand why :D

Matt

I really really enjoyed the original dungeon keeper :D Great fun. Its levels were short and over fairly quicker. Evil genius just drags on and on and on :(

Most if not all of these games are Sequels, and therefore cant be "Innovative" :S

Now we've been here before, yes they can.

they hold nothing "new" in the way of ideas, theyre merely an extension to a story :D

Dungeon Keeper was just Dominus MK2!

I've only actually played one of them - Doom 3 and that was good but anything but innovative (in gameplay terms)

Doom3 for the realtime lighting. Also the fact it made me shit my pants.

I just picked Bloodlines up a couple of days back in a sale and it does indeed rock, hugeley entertaining, highly recommended. I don't even llike rpg's but this is kind of KotoR style, all the 20-sided dice stuff is kept under the hood..

I'm about halfway through and I suspect it might even have some replay value.
