Fighter Details (all stats correct at time of fight, unless otherwise stated)

Wanderlei Silva (http://www.pridefc.com/pride2004/fighters/S/S14.htm)

Age: 28
Height: 5 ft 11"
Weight: 203 lbs
Disciplines: Muay Thai Kickboxing / Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Story: Probably the biggest name in MMA. A deadly fighter when standing up, and equally competent whilst on the ground. Silva is the man nobody wants to fight, yet they know they have to beat to show theyre the best. Undefeated in 19 previous matches in Pride.

Mark Hunt

Age: 31
Height: 5 ft 10"
Weight: 272 lbs
Disciplines: Kickboing
Story: Whilst Hunt is a legend in K1, winning several different tournaments and titles, he is yet to prove himself under MMA rules. With 2 fights under his belt in Pride, inluding a loss against Judo Gold Medalist Hidehiko Yoshida, and an unimpressive win against Dan Bobish. A fight against Silva could well be considered as being thrown in at the deep end....

Story Behind The Fight

Not much to say really. Silva was due to fight Kazushi Sakuraba for the 4th time (Yawn), but Sakuraba withdrew from the fight just a few days prior to the event with a broken rib. Pride sent a memo out to all the fighters on their rosters, asking if they would like to fight Silva on only 3 days notice. Only Hunt responded...

Minty Says

Basically, this match was chosen due to the fact that Ive never seen another match quite like it. And as they say on the news, if you dont want to know the scores, look away..... now!

Hunt wins! And deservedly so if you ask me. The commentary team seem to disagree with the judges decision, but the one thing they seem to forget is the defining rule. The one thing that the judges score a fight on above all else. Attempting to finish the fight. Hunt does everything he can to knock Silva out, whilst Silva just seems to want to stay out of Hunts way. SIlva takes the full mount position on a few occassions. Full mount is one of the most offensive positions a fighter can take.... and yet he just lies there. If this was fought under UFC rules, Silva would have won due to his control of his opponent, and his takedowns. But its not, its Pride and Hunt deservedly wins.

Oh and make sure you actually watch this carefully. Some of the fighting on the ground is extremely clever, with some things Ive never seen in an MMA fight before. Unfortunately, it does mean you need to know what the fighters are doing on the ground, but if you get stuck, Ill happily explain :)

Should the bandwith limit be reached, the file will be temporarily removed, as this will cost me extra. If you enjoyed this video, go out and buy your own DVDs! MMA is still a fledgling sport, and needs as much support as we can give it in the UK if it is to flourish)

Seen it last night excellent fight. Silva was rocked by a couple of those punch's (Which I've never seen before!) Hunt did ok on the ground considering he's in K1, am I also correct in saying Hunt has never been KO'd before?

You are correct, the bloke has a head made of stone. In K1 he was rubbish, was tough to beat but never looked threatening. I have to say he impressed me against Silva, although the result surprised me. I'd have given it to Silva considering the weight difference and the way he controlled most of the ground work.

I've got a couple of Pride DVD's and the judges score on Brutality, Damage, Take downs, Weight difference and efforts to finish the fight. Hunt was way heavier than Silva but the knockdowns caused by Hunt's punch's must have rated highly with the judges.

If Hunt was more of a technical fighter and worked more on his body mechanics along with a crash course on groundwork, he could become a very formidable fighter.

I would have gone for a draw so a rematch was inevitable :)

See my spoiler in the first post for my explanation as to why Hunt won.

Silvas one weak point is his ground work. Don't think he has ever won from the ground. He had Sakuraba in an armbar once and let go of it.

He got a nice keylock on Hunt in that fight, but Hunts escape was nothing short of amazing
