Didn't they have a problem with battery life at some point, and a new one was as much (or almost) as a new iPOD (probably when they first came out)?

its an inherent problem in Lithium Ion batteries - they die after around 18 months. Using and charging as they're designed to be used increases the lifespan.

The thing that hit the net was a guy who was told (incorrectly unfortunately) there was no way of changing the battery and he'd be better off buying a new one.
