BDC IV - Gone To The Dogs - Sat 30th April

It's been long, too long. In keeping with the "Let's go out for drinks" theme I take great pleasure in announcing the fourth Brighton Drinking Club. This time it's canine.

We'll kick off with some sunny afternoon beers near Brighton Station, wander down to the beach some shopping and food then, after a short siesta make our respective ways first to my local boozer for a livener, then to THE DOGS.

We're lucky enough to have a Coral Racecourse within walking distance so what better way to spend a spring evening than gambling and drinking in the company of dodgy blokes in sheepskin coats? (and that's just Cheazy).

The racecourse, situated within walking distance of Hove Station and only half a mile from the A27 has space for 350 cars and 2500 spectators. There are multiple bars, a decent enough resturant and a number of fastfood concessions. Entry on Sat night is only Five British Pounds. Drinks and food are acceptably priced. Minimum bets are low, you get a racecard with all the details upon entry.

We'll assume a 2pm kickoff on the sat arvo, as usual there are a few flat spaces (available on a fcfs basis) and a good number of reasonably priced hotels/b'n'b's around the town. I'll flesh the finer points of the itinery out nearer the time

It's £30 a head for a 3 course meal which includes entry and a bet-runner service where you have our own tote runner who comes to your table. I did this on Saturday night and it was pretty cool. The dog track I frequent in Birmingham has an Upper and Lower grandstand, the one end of the upper houses the restaurant and the rest of it is basically a big bar interspersed by cheery old grannies in tote booths which is generally populated by office/hen/stag parties and anyone else along for an occasional flutter (i.e me).

The Lower grandstand is an entirely different proposition, it's a couple of quid cheaper to get in but has the feel of a litter-strewn cab office filled with inbred yokels and sheepskin wearing munters who smell faintly of greyhound piss.

I'm assuming there's a general blueprint for Dog tracks the world over and we'll be living it up in the non-restaurant upstairs bit with the girls in short skirts?

Worth mentioning btw, that there are no "cheap seats" as such. The resturant area is attached to the upstairs bar and you may wander freely. The only thing booking gets you is the table. There's still loads of food options, both standing and seated, available off-the-cuff.

Due the Bank Holiday my choice of hotel was limited and prices all go up in May, bandits like the Quality Inn were quoting £95 per night for a single room. As it is I've got my transport and two nights accomodation for just under £100.

Nah, should be fine, all the reviews of The Abbey suggest it's a basic but decent accomodation and I've got in for £25 a night which is half what I paid in the Dudley last time and that was an awful place.

Well I've returned after a quality weekend, although I feel absolutely battered.

Friday night turned into one of those familiar "it's 4am and I'm locked in a pub, drinking corona, eating salami and playing a game that involves mild electrocusion whilst wearing Miss Marples hat" type of nights.

Saturday was a day of recovery and chilling on the totty strewn pebble beach swigging warm lager, catching up with old aquaintances and meeting new people. Later on trickery.net's finest minds and ego's took on the best that the Sussex betting industry had to throw at us and came out erm, slightly down.
Nevermind, we still had chance to regain our pride in the lock-in pool tournament although pretty much only Dave (Socrates) looked like he'd ever held a cue before and we all crashed out of the killer compo to a bunch of girls before calling an early night at 2.30.

Most of today for me was spent wondering which stage of my many-legged train journey I was most likely to vom on, but there was a bright spot of being seated amongst 9 fit birds from Loughborough on their way home from a hen weekend.
