A friend of mine is going travelling in a couple of weeks time, shes going to South Africa, Australia, New York and Mexico for 3-4months. I'm thinking to get her a travel book... perhaps one which gives sensible advice etc, or maybe even survival tips in case she gets stuck out somewhere (as a joke/satirical)... was wondering if anyone had any suggestions?

Rough Guide books are highly thought of.

The "Lonely Planet" ones are useful too

Lonely Planet are I find generally more popular than Rough Guide. Whenever I travel every non-local I see is clutching their LP. I have more experience of LP I admit, but find it better than RG.

They are very good guides. But I kind of think they are too powerful. If a bar/restaurant/hotel/trip is in 'The Guide' it is popular, if it is missed out it is empty. They make/break places when they should only be reporting what they are like.

LP guides always have general travel tips in too. How to avoid crime, etc. Special sections for being a female traveller, gay traveller, etc.

I guess a plain normal travel guide is a bit boring as a present, but they are fantastically useful. Vital even. It would be a bit expensive for her to buy a guide for each place she goes, so you maybe helping out with the cost would be good?

I was in Mexico for a few weeks during Christmas/New Year in '03/'04, so if she wants some specific advice, good places to go or stay maybe I can help?

cheers HT, that would be great. I think she'd like to know about places to visit, maybe some do's and don'ts would be cool too

I think I'll get her a guide to Mexico and maybe Aus, as South Africa shes visiting relatives and well, New york is new york :)
