OK, so I only just found this, but it's damn useful if there's a few of you who play at the same time and want to chat, but you want to do your own thing instead of grouping. It saves your Spatial window getting spammed with /tells and /replies too :)
Right-click next to the tabs in the chat window, and click "Join Chat Channel", then you should see the chatroom window pop up. Under your server name there is a general chatroom, where it says you can create your own. Click this then click Create Room, give it a name and a description, and set it to private (assuming you just want your mates in it).
Another window appears listing the people in the room (which should just be yourself), click Invite and type the name of the person you want to chat to, repeat as necessary until all the people you want are in there. You can set moderator status on whoever you like (the room creator gets automatic mod status), and kick/ban people from the room. It appears as another tab on your chat window, so you can flick between Spatial and your room whenever you like, when the room's active you type directly into there - no need for any slash commands. If you create it under the server root directory, you can chat with people no matter where they are - I was on Endor/Corellia/Naboo and the others in the room were on Dantooine/Tatooine.
Not sure how long the room stays up for, I'd assume until the last person leaves. If you quit the game (or crash out :!:)and the room's still active, you can just join it again via the Join Chat Channel option (assuming your invite still stands).
If anyone comes on and says "I knew that!", tough :P - I only found it last night and it's a godsend if you like to do solo stuff, or if you're all Bounty Hunters being sent to different planets.
