Wouldn't touch 98 with a long stick m8, if your hardware will run XP then go XP, if your hardware is cracking on a bit use Win2k as XP may stress it a little too much.

They are the best of the Windoze OS's for reliability! Just keep em patched up!

There is virtually no difference between XP and 2K when it comes to games. They use the same driver models, the use the same kernel, they are basically the same OS except XP has some nice twidly bits to go with it. If you like the twiddly bits (Which I do personally :)) get XP. If not, get 2000. Simple as that :)

Would suggest you go with XP, its stable, quick .. runs ok if you have plenty of ram. Less than 512megs ram tho, look at Win2k. XP has lots of support, it works with most hardware and most newer games will possibly prefer it. It has a compatibility mode for older games too, although some dos stuff really gets upset.

Win2k doesn't feel as responsive as XP on the same hardware to me tho

Avoid Win 9x these days (don't even consider Me)

XP is better at handling games than win2k was

I'd be on 2k if it wasn't for its lack of bluetooth

xp is 2k in drag though it is supposed to have better games support. I'm sure I saw a comparison between the three and it was XP>98>2k>ME though there wasnt a huge dfference.

XP does have the evil product authorisation though so if youve got a few PCs 2k is a better bet

ive never had a problem with 2k, especially with the latest service packs

XP product activation sucks - and the new "look" slows things down so you'll want to revert to classic style for best performance

If you go for XP then get Pro, Home suxx0rs

(and yes Im talking from experience - I run 2k sp4 at home and at work we have several 2k,XPHome and XPPro machines)

Thanx for opinions guys. I think I'm gonna stick with 2K for now. XP still looks like it came from Fisher Price.

WinXP with the 'classic' theme (http://www.halflife-central.com/temp/desktop.jpg)

Another thing worth mentioning is that if you have any 'old' applications. WinXP's compatability gubbins makes them work 8 out of 10 times. W2K's compatability stuff doesn't work nearly as well.

not that many ppl want to play DOS games tho now do they?

seriously - it may be better in XP but the only trouble Ive ever had was getting a real early copy of photoshop to run in 2k.
It was a bit dodgy so I upgraded - everything else including Win95 games and stuff run fine for me without any problems whatsoever

I spose the service packs have helped that a lot

Medeval: Total War didn't work without the 'win98' setting on XP. (The MTW:VI 2.1 patch fixed this though)

Thinking about things working and not

NeverWinter Nights worked fine on 2k3 straight out of the box for me but failed when I installed it on an XP machine at work (dont tell the boss :E ) had to download a patch to get it working under XP

Conversely, Total War worked fine on my XP but wouldn't run when I patched it :(
