4000+ m.p.h(mach 7)They finally got the thing to work after the last test ended in failure, new Concorde potential for the rich to get to their lunches faster? or a breakthrough for the benefit of mankind?

Can't see too many little old ladies visiting their Grandchildren in Oz via one of those, the acceleration would kill them :o
Then there's the heat due to friction, everybody on board will need a good environmental suit + some mental air conditioning onboard.
From what I see, the vehicle isn't constructed too differently, materials-wise, from the SR-71 Blackbird. The crew onboard those babies used to cook their dinner (astronaut-style slop in a tube or squeezy packet) by placing it hard up against the inside of the cockpit canopy = piping hot in no time ;)

Sorry to break the news, but the programs been cancelled. The last launch will be during the fall.
The money was moved from the project to fund the future lunar exploration. I for one know what I'd have done out of the two and it doesn't involve going to the moon :!:

They was saying about this in Clarkson, about how NASA hope to create a plan to travel from Australia to GB in 4hours.

I thought the whole point of scramjets was to make attaining low Earth orbit easier(cheaper)?

It is. However, it will also provide propulsion for commercial airliners. The media appears to have advertised the airliner part to generate more publicity.

It is about time the X-15 record of mach 6.7 (set in 1967) was broken.
Cheers.

Acording to the sunday times weve been there 'n' done it already. not much comercial use as you have to get to about 60,000ft before it will work.
And you need a fuel tank the size of an aircraftcarrier.
And you have to get to about 2/3,000 mph before it will work.
So we stoped two or three years ago.
Apparently.

I would imagine it would have commercial use. London to Sydney in an hour or so would be pretty useful.
You'd just need to design a passenger aircraft that can fly high and has rockets for the initial boost. I thought the point of scramjets was that they got most of their fuel from the air that is forced through them as they go fast.

Of course it would be useful, I meant financially viable, look at concord; not sure it even made a profit, and that’s with relativity simple technology.
It was more of a flagship than a profit making venture.
