*nix Image/State Backup
Anyone got any recommendations in this area? Not one I have much exposure to. There seems to be some product out there - partimage for one (open source and scantly documented), Image for Linux which straight up looks ropey as cock.
Has anyone got any hands on with something supported (doesn't need to be free or even cheap) that can spin images out to network locations? - for bonus points the nix environment I'm looking at is under VMware. |

Are you backing up the VMware OS itself or your VMDKs?

The linux vmdks - with the windows environments on the same Vhost we'd back up from within the environment. With the linux environment I'm open to suggestion - if there's a comparable product to shadowprotect that's operable from the OS then it would be nice to know about it - if it comes down to just replicating the vmdk's then that's an option.

It's not cheap but we use Commvault Simpana to do our VMware backups. It backs up the VMDKs so would back up both Windows and Linux VMs. You'd also be able to browse inside your Windows backups so you can recover individual files and folders too.
I've heard others recommend Veeam and Microsoft DPM but I've had no experience with those two. |

Will rsync not work? Will need a bit of scripting. Free though.
Oh. Not supported, however. As you were.

Yeah I think it's going to be veeam for the nix instances - the main issue is that we're VM'ing a currently physical setup - and they invested in a full windows backup setup less than two years ago so a nix environment specific to slot alongside would have been handy.
Oh well - their choice, their expense! |
