It takes a bit to get going, due to all the family stuff, who's who, etc.
You're lucky you can go straight onto book 2... I had to wait 9 months before it was published in English. I was clamouring for it once I'd reached the end of the first one.

Reading the second one - the first one was sufficiently enjoyable and also an improvement on the film (which was good and got me interested in the first place).

Have the third lined up and The Stand to follow.

BTW - has anyone read Ready Player One by Ernest Cline? - I've heard good things. Wanted some thoughts.

Heavens Shadow by David Goyer and Michael Cassutt. It reminds me of the books I read when I was young, stuff like Greg Bear and Larry Niven. A proper spacey / exploration sci-fi yarn. About half way through liking it so far! yes it's got one or two wee bits so far that made me go .. what really? But we'll see how it ends up
Finished this the other week. Really enjoyed it. Proper old style Sci-Fi , shades of Rama and Forge of God in there, which is a good thing!

It's made me dig out my old rather tatty copy of Footfall by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle. Which if you havent read is an alien first contact story set at the height of the cold war in the mid 80's. Great story!

The Hydrogen Sonata

The Hydrogen Sonata is an upcoming novel by Iain M. Banks set in the universe of The Culture, reportedly the longest Culture novel yet released. It will be released in October 2012. [1]

At a book signing at Foyles in London, England on April 11th 2012, Mr Banks briefly described the The Hydrogen Sonata as "it's about the whole subliming business".
Some new culture. Nice.

Currently reading

Chronicles of the Black Company by Glen Cook , a collected edition comprising the first three books. Really enjoying it so far, can totally see it's influence on later fantasy writes!

Just finished the Harry Dresden books that I can... locate. I like them. Now working on the Ranger's Apprentice books. They're okay but they seem to go too quickly in the actual books and then they seem disjointed between them. Not a bad series but I feel that I've gone through six of them far too quickly already.

Not sure where I'm going to jump off to next. Got my hands on the Foundation books again so I might give them another run as I've got a hankering for some sci-fi.

Exiles and Renegades, 2 books of the Progenitor series by Dan Worth.

Nice little self published scifi series that aren't overly technical or mindless drivel, both of which seem very common these days. Some good concepts and an enjoyable pace to them although maybe not the most fleshed out of characters but i'd recommend them anyway especially since they're £2 a go

Looks worth a go tbh!

Finished Chronicles of the Black Company. Fantastic. Really good fantasy , I loved the narrative style. Characters are great, it touches on some larger plots without losing where it is in the here and now.

I can totally see where this series has influenced guys like Joe Abercrombie and even George RR Martin in the style and way it's written. Highly recommended.

I've started in on the next collection , The Books Of the South which comprise the next three novels.

Off on holiday for the next fortnight ( sadly nowhere sunny , just not working ) and have got a pile of stuff to keep me going

In no particular order

The Many Deaths of the Black Company and the Return of the Black Company which are the other two collections.
Jack Campbells latest Lost Fleet - Invincible
Existence - David Brin
2312 - Kim Stanley Robinson
Shadow and Betrayal - Daniel Abraham
The Skinner - Neal Asher ( started this a while ago on a lunch break but never got round to buying it )
Hydrogen Sonata - Iain M Banks ( I'll need to reread the culture stuff from the start however )
and finally Calibans War - Book 2 of The Expanse series and the follow up to Leviathan Wakes , one of my favourite Sci-Fi books of the past few years written by James SA Corey ( the pen name for Daniel Abraham and George Martins assistant Ty Frank )

Reading the first book of "A Song Of Fire And Ice" and already have the second book purchased and ready to go when I finish. Only halfway through (Kindle says 49%) and I already have a pretty good idea of whats going to happen, but it really is fantastically written and captivating.
