Bear in mind it'll be taxed at the income bracket for the month (and for NIC) so even though the bonus may not take your annual salary to the bracket above, it may do so on a monthly basis and you will get a rebate on over-paid tax in the following year.

Do you actually need life insurance to get a mortgage or is it just another thing that a mortgage advisor tries to get you to take out?

A quick google says no, but I wouldn't mind getting some opinions.

BTW: my work pays 6 months full pay if I'm sick and I also have a (works) death benefit thing signed over to my gf, which would cover most of what we are borrowing.

Why though fella, considering what I mentioned above, Ie: We have kind of a work life insurance (death benefit) which would cover plenty of what we are lending if either of us dies, and if work gets rid of us then we are both in for a large redundancy payout which again when used to pay off the mortgage would allow us to work at tescos and cover the remaining with ease!! (I've been at the same place for 19 years now :o).

So we are both thinking, why bother with all this extra £40 a month here and £30 a month there when we could be saving it for a rainy day.

Just not sure if we're in a position to take on a commitment like that, i know it's a small one but we go on holiday alot and have weekends away etc

Anyone that buys an animal not specifically bred to be permanently housebound should be shot. It's cruel and also knowing a few cunts that have done it (cat owners), far far more hassle than you'd think.

I have to say, despite being a former housecat owner, years ago, it's far from ideal. At least in my instance, the folks took it in, and I got the job of looking after it, as it formerly belonged to my Gran who had to be taken into residential care, suffering from dementia, it was that or the C&D home, and, being an old cat, the chances of it being re-homed elsewhere were roughly zip, sadly.

Having been a housecat owner I can concur it's a big commitment to be taking on. tbh it was like having a baby who could look after herself for very short periods of time. We couldn't leave her longer than one night which limited our short hols in the van and when we went away for large periods of time (weeks +) I was lucky enough to know someone who would house sit and look after her (lots of house cats hate being put in a cattery and can't cope with it).

Saying that, I wouldn't of swapped having my youngster for the world and was willing to sacrifice certain freedoms to give her a nice life from age 12 onwards (when I got her from the cat home).
