Ouya. Mobile Gaming on a TV

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...o-game-console

I like a bit of hot Xbox action as much as the next person but having some of the great games on the mobile platform but on a console, and a cheap one at that, has its appeal.

The project wanted 950k and currently has 2.48million after 48 hours. Could be interesting if it does what it says and receives as positive a reception in practice as it seems to have in theory.

Thoughts? Worth £100 punt? I agree with them that great games aren't the sole domain of the likes of EA and Activision. But are there enough bedroom devs to make it work?

OnLive has made, or is making, an appearance on Smart TVs I believe also.

Things I love about this:
1. I can play all my android games I already own on a big screen.
2. We should finally be able to get good games at a fair price, no more being held to ransom by huge companies.
3. As there are already emulators made for the android platform, we'll be able to play all those old classics (OG MarioKart anyone?) on the big screen again.
4. As it's open source, we could see media add-ons, usb tv, xbmc port?
5. Fair competition for small devs

Things that concern me about it...

1. Most Android games are made for a touch device, although I have read that the controller will have a small "touch" section on it which seems strange, why not just add a separate optional dumb touch controller or add a mobile app so you can use your phone as a controller.

2. I'm guessing a lot of people will want to use it to play emulated games, MarioKart, Sonic, etc. This would require space to store roms so what kind of storage does it have and would it be expandable, like USB thumb drive or USB hard drive?

It has 8 gigs of storage in it.

We were talking about the controller thing. But when thinking about it we realised it can't be a massive leap for devs. For example you can play max payne and GTA3 on the Transformer Prime using either a bluetoothed PS3 controller or a wired 360 one.

I am thinking positive for pretty much all the reasons you pointed out. The fact it's meant to be hackable means it could easily end up becoming or being used for something no one saw. Xbox - XBMC is the classic example.

Also for £100 it could easily be upgraded with a newer model a few years down the road like we do phones.

Cheap media centre mind if it does tank as there is an xbmc apk out for android. Plus the internals seem half decent.

I can see it being a pain in the arse for Android devs though. All Android phones are touch screen, but this console will be controller based. That means any games currently out will have to be adapted for a controller and any future games will have to have both control schemes for phones and console users. I can't see many dev teams bothering really. Anyone who is interested in android games already has an android smart phone. why bother with the TV version. Also most games are going to look awful blown up to 32 inches plus.

I've been a bit flippant, but the concept of developers devoting resources to create big screen Android titles on any kind of scale is a bit implausible. To quote Eurogamer,
