Aye given the themes of the least worst opening ceremony i've seen were multiculturalism and music its a bit ironic that it was almost spoiled by a black DJ*

*couldnt for the life of me figure out how to ramrod industrialism into that.

By all means say "This bit is to signify this" but stop the on-air wanking over how awesome it is.

The whole empty seats issue pisses me off. They shouldn't pander so much to sponsors and "Olympic family", (and that's a bullshit term if I've ever heard one).

Nail-biting ending for the men's team gymnastics!! Right down to the very last athlete.

It was disappointing, but based on my half remembered and 10 years out of date knowledge of the judging rules, the Japanese were right to challenge it.

Kristian Thomas was a used to train at the club I went to, and he was bloody good back then

True, completely within their rights the Japs were. Didn't like it one bit though, gutted for the boys, yet ecstatic for them at the same time.

And how great to hear the Brit commentators shouting and screaming in excitement too - really showed they were passionate about the result

It would be great if we could push ahead of some of the big boys on the medal table like Lithuania and Georgia.

It's the same story every time (major athletics event) with the medals. Until we get to the track & field events GB do bugger all (exception: slight increase in medals when the rowing/sailing start).

Beijing was an enigma medal wise because our cyclists all came of age and it's now taken very seriously as a sport in this country. We also got a few medals from the swimming which is normally barren for GB (as is being demonstrated again this time)

I reckon we'll get quite a decent haul from the indoor cycling events (no brainer) and possibly a few from the rowing/sailing. Isn't bowling an event that we tend to do well in (lol)?

The track & field team is arguably weaker than it was when I was a nipper so I wouldn't be surprised if GB bomb, at least comparitively to the publics expectations. There's a few decent gold prospects like Ennis and Farah (calling it now - Ennis will either get injured or be mediocre) but I reckon the track & field will be largely bronze and silver if anything.

Heartbreaking stuff from someone who seems pretty genuine
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/olympics/19064394

With regards Britain on the track, I'm not sure we were so disproprtionately hot at Beijing, finishing 8th in the Athletics medal table with 4.

The empty seats...yeah, unless the government forgot, there's a recession, us proles can't afford £2000 for ONE seat at ONE event, maybe if they had priced the seats more fairly then they would have sold out every event.

Pricing has nothing to do with it, the uber expensive seats all basically sold out.

The resale is certainly working, a co-worker got some in one and spent today sat about 10 rows away from some of the royals watching the horses... so it's not like people can't afford to buy them.

Right, the resale's not the issue, its the huge number of seats reserved for IOC officials and journalists to take up on an ad-hoc basis, and which they're plainly not the slightest bit interested in using for the earlier events. Coupled with national federations not sending unsold tickets back and it leads to a load of empty seats.

I'm not sure any of us should be surprised by this , it's always been the case for the major sporting events as long as I can remember.

As the Guardian article says , with the continual and imo increasing corporate whoring out it's not going to change. I think the extremely amusing and contradictory message of having McDonalds and Coke as two Sponsors / Partners indicates how compromised the "Olympic" ideal is these days.

Medal wise ... agree with popej , China was an over achievement I think. Hoping we do as well , but not expecting to!

The problem being of course that running a lympits is now a multi-billion quid affair. I'd certainly rather more came from horrendous filth merchants than my own pocket.

Also, the equestrian got me going earlier! 20,000 people holding their breath and all you could hear was the horse snarling and panting over each fence, awesome stuff.
