Highlights:

Move to Client/Server architecture for single player.
Better, less laggy SMP plus encryption for communication.
LAN play (browse lan games, make your SP game visible on the LAN)
Chat improvements.
Emeralds and Emerald Ore for trading.

No Mod API yet, been pushed back to 1.4.

Weird Lighting bugs still persist.

Turns out theres been quite a few additions and improvements in this one. Heres some videos to explain, courteousy of the jolly spiffing GameChaps.

1. Game Engine Improvements - The game should now run at a higher frame rate and can handle a large amount of mobs and TNT.

2. New game modes: Hardcore mode for SMP and Adventure mode, which prevents you from placing or breaking blocks. Good for adventure map makers.

3. Trading with villagers with the new "Emeralds" that now spawn rarely. This video also features the new "Book and Quill" item that allows you to leave long messages for other users. Again this is more use to adventure map makers.

4. New items and blocks - The new afforementioned Emeralds, tripwires and Ender Chests. Ender Chests allow you to access a personal chest, the same size as your inventory from anywhere in the world. So you could have one Ender Chest in your house and another in your mine and anything placed into it will be available from both locations. Its also completely indestructible.

5. Both TNT and creepers now have a varying amount of damage, dependant upon the difficulty mode you are playing on. Both explosions also cause a knockback now as well.

6. Snooper mode - Mojang have started collecting data about your computer by default. They say its for improving the performance of the game and fixing bugs, but you can opt out. Just remember that its enabled by default.

Those GameChaps are like an extremely gay version of Yogscast. That's saying something! There's something wrong with modern games when the two you play the most are minecraft (bought ages ago for under a tenner) and TF2 (free) ;-)

Well Id given up on Minecraft tbh, its only the Tekkit mod thats keeping me playing, amazing as it is

Still, constant updates, optimisation, mod support and freedom to play the game as you want without the need for purchasing DLC every other week really helps.

Expect 1.3.2 any time soon. The game bombs out with an "internal server error" every minute or so for me and a lot of people.
