how do something that has the ability to fire warning shots and something with the word 'tanker' in the title manage to hit, surely the tanker is like a slow moving iceberg and the destroyer's should have been paying attention if out of dock - they're the military, it's what they do. definitely an 'oops' moment

Even if it's not a full-size supertanker, just a small 'un supplying local refineries, those things still have a shite stopping distance/turning circle-which is why, in theory, the bridge crew ought to know wtf they're doing at all times.

Still, crazy things happen sometimes. My old man served as a Stoker (still had 'em in those days) on a Fishery Protection vessel in the '50s, he was at the wheel one time when the First Officer gave a blatantly unsafe order in a tight channel, in very bad weather, a PO immediately countermanded the order (turned out the FO was in the process of having a breakdown, not helped by his alcoholism and speed addiction), but still a dicy moment...
