Hmm, senior RN Officer in "getting his facts a tad twisted in front of the DSC", partial shocker.

I hadn't realised the Yanks were calling their new CVNs the Gerry Ford class though-he was best known for falling flat on his face when getting out of aircraft, as I recall

Now if they had called them the Betty Ford Class, that would have been something; "Ma! I got that posting I wanted-ah'm goin' on the Betty Ford!"

I thought, after the SDSR, that the last-minute decision to go with the cat version was odd tbh. More so after watching front-bench posturing in the Commons-the claims that Labour; "...couldn't decide.." on which version of the Lightning II to buy-and that now the Tories were in charge, they'd do the job right...

Now we're back with the thorny question of which AWACS bird to fly off the Carriers, the latest E-3 variant no longer being an option.

Aussies starting to get a little skittish over the cost of their F-35s.

Had a feeling things might pan out this way for some nations. Exchequers balking at the cost, development/production delays at source, shades of the Typhoon experience almost. One can only hope that things move along a wee bit quicker in this instance, as there's a dirty great Carrier taking shape just a few miles up the road from where I'm sitting which will need aircraft.

It is an impressive piece of engineering but I can't help feeling that while it will be fine we will lose out on other aspects of the carriers abilities that will lessen its ability overall.

Not that I am really that surprised.

Ahhh, it's the mantra; "...fitted for but not with.." that's currently in vogue. In theory, the design-along with that of the Type 45s and future Type 26/27s-will be adaptable enough, with modular sections etc., that major changes can be made with relatively little hassle.

I'm pretty sure it's only the Nimitz class ones that are actively commissioned, with a a couple of Ford class , the replacements under construction. Like for us , our two on that diagram aren't active.
