So what makes a good commuting bike then? Last bike i had was an old Raleigh mountain bike about 15 years ago.

Something lightweight, with fairly thin tyres, plenty of gears. They are sometimes called "urban" bikes. Of course, you can use a normal road bike, but hybrids look better.

eg.

Nice. How much do they knock off for the C2W scheme? Is it just the VAT, or are they lower still?

e: it seems that Halfords aren't one of the stores i can get a bike from (assuming i get OK'd). This is the list:
http://www.specializedconceptstore.c...lymouth-store/ - Specialized bikes, durr.
http://www.plymouthcyclescene.co.uk/ - quite a range, including Kona etc.
http://www.naturalcycles.co.uk/ - no stock on the website, but it mentions Dawes and Claud Butler.
http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/ - Raleigh, CB etc
http://www.thebikecellar.co.uk/ - Trek

plus a couple of others that are further away.

e2: it seems my mates company http://www.biketart.com/ is in this scheme, although it's the other side of the country from me. It also doesn't seem to sell many bikes under the £1000 limit

Depends if you're higher or lower rate tax. The saving is around 35% - 40% and depends on what the "transfer fee" (to transfer ownership from your company to you) is at the end of the 12 month scheme. At Norfolk County Council they charge 20% of the 20% VAT of the bike. Remember "technically" during the 12 month "loan" the bike belongs to your employer not you.

Bugger, i don't qualify because i don't have a fixed salary, i have to claim my hours after working them, even though i'm contracted to do x amount of hours. Cocksnot.

I recently bought some spd pedals and shoes. I like them.
Went mountain biking with them as well

In a sick twist of events ... I now need a new mountain bike. My 20 year old steed needed a bullet to it's head last weekend.

A mate has let me borrow his spare bike ... but I'm now on the lookout for a suitable replacement!

Almost won a Spesh Enduro Expert on ebay t'other day!
