400 notes easily bags him the Asus Transformer Tf300 with keyboard dock. I don't hesitate to recommend it unless he's massively used to windows or has poor eyesight (even at 10.1 the view may be less useful than a cheapy laptop with a lower res).

He was a little concerned at the screen size. I will let him play with the ipd a bit more, see if he gets on ok with that (same size, no?).

It seems poss. to get some software that will read office docs, and presume PDFs too. Ideally though he would like to see it in the flesh.

Oh for sure if he's comfy with the ipad this'll be fine. Not worth considering an ipad btw? Does he need keyboard?

Cheers Sci, I'll mention it to him.

Well, he likes my pad. But I think he needs it to read word docs and suchlike. Does such a facility exist?

Office2HD (or possibly something that's superceded it) is a worthy purchase on the ipad as apple's stock clobber mangles some excel.

Hm. I told him that that didn't exist. I'll mention it, as he's definitely got on well with the ipad. Didn't need to show him how to use it or anything. It might be the keyboard that swing it though.

The other thing that might swing is the expandable memory. Although, I can't see him struggling to fill 32gb, so the Asus compares favourably on price with the ipad at this level.

Asus is also nice for pouring stuff out of cameras if that's useful. proper USB host in the dock.

To d/l pics from a to the device? THat could be handy.

The only thing that makes ME pause, is that inevitably, if it goes wrong, he's going to give it to me to sort. Is it easy to back these things up? To fix? Never played with a 'droid OS before.

Oh christ that's far less hassle - especially if you can get him to buy into the google logon ecosystem which carries your faves etc.

When you devicewipe it takes about 2 mins to present a totally clean OS and doesn't wipe your storage unless you specifically ask.

The USB hookup (with a 64gb card in the asus) was superb on holiday for dumping the camera each night. If the measure of such a device is how often I use it then I really can't rate the thing enough.

I have the prime - but most differences are cosmetic I think. The prime is all metal action wheras the 300 I think has resin parts.

Coming soon for 600 odd is the Infinity which is prime style chassis - larger screen and 3G capability with a SIM.

Oh - and barring a few badly written apps here and there (mostly games I've sideloaded) there is literally nothing to go wrong with the thing. Initially the firmware that came out of the box would result in a turned off rather than sleeping tablet but that's fixed. My hinge gained a little looseness but they'll give you a new one if you report (I just microphillipsed the thing)

Have you got the kb? Just checked out 1 review that the build quality affects it a little when you have the TF300 in 'laptop' config, whereby the keyboard isn't that stable. I guess he needs to look at it in the shop to see if he can live with it.

The 300 is plastic not metal. It doesn't have super IPS. It has less storage. That's it. And the unbalanced thing is because all the weight is in the "screen" when in laptop config so if you cant the screen back its easier to tip it if you push on the screen too hard. Never really been an issue on my prime.

I've got a Moto Xoom (1st Version), which I've just upgraded to JellyBean (Latest version of Android), and it's still fantastic despite being one of the first decent tablets and about 2-3 years old.

The Transformer's have considerably more oomph. Certainly well worth a bash.

so this is still on the cards for my dad for when he next goes abroad
however, what's the nexus like? why no flash support??

and also the new samsung with the transcriber pad thingy? heard it will blow the competition away (of course)
still a fan of the ASUS though, for build, and the nice IPS screens

hmmm I'm getting a weird vibrating/shocky feel from the case of my Prime much like what Sci posted. I am in thailand mind so maybe it's those foreign electricities.

Very solid Tegra offering from Tosh at a notch under 300 notes.

Its for the same innards as the nexus 7 so presume it was a nice easy fit.

Asus have said the USA and Canada roll out of the Prime Jelly starts within 48 hours. The Worldwide shortly after.
