The trial of Oink is finally on after it was shut down in 2007. LOL at the prosecution trying to make him sound like an underworld crime lord.

So turns out pirates are willing to pay for a good service then..

I've not legally bought any music since oink was shut down (except the rage track :p) compared to dozens of CDs every month when it was still up and running. I doubt i'll ever pay for any music ever again tbh.

The bit on donations allowing invites isn't correct either from what I remember.

I still miss oink, I don't have or can't find any new music any more

Spotify is good, i'm listening right now.... But it's not especially great quality and well known tracks are missing never mind obscure stuff! Plus it in no way helps me find new music.

That's true ... it doesn't have new upcoming artists on there, that's for sure.

I tried an experiment with a shared playlist and getting people to update as they wanted. It kinda worked to an extent.

Same here (in response to Spotify) ... especially if they sort out backgrounding apps on my iphone. Since it's no longer pwned!

So is there any current day alternatives to Oink these days?

It's like 4 years on since it shut down and i've barely found any new music or bands I like since then. Whenever I find a new band I like I can't find anywhere to listen to their bloody music so don't end up buying anything. It's like i've reached that point in life where all new music is shit and you don't buy anything new and start listing to Radio 2. But I think it might just be because I can't find anywhere to find the music I might like.

PM me if not forum postable links.

Cheers

My way of finding new music nowadays seems to be via twitter.

Follow some music blogs (such as The Quietus, Drowned In Sound, The 405, DIY), follow some artists/musicians that you like and are actually engaging. Then stuff that gets recommended or sounds interesting, get searched on Spotify and plonked into a playlist for later listening.

Works quite well for me

What.cd is great but it's damn hard to maintain any form of ratio on the site as more or less every conceivable release is already being seeded and seeded hard...

Waffles.fm is good and doesnt have the same amount of OCD content that What.cd has so you can get a bit of a foothold in there if needs be.

There are ways to get round the ratios. I wouldn't condone this per say, but if it is as bad as you say then perhaps its the only way to survive short of purchasing a a seed box?

Well Im a member of both sites (Ta for the waffles invite Russ ) and I find it equally difficult to maintain ratio on both sites. However I download a FUCKLOAD more from What.cd than I do from Waffles so I end up seeding a lot more, which seems to help a lot. Im still under 1.0 ratio with both sites though, not for lack of trying (I actually have a ratio of over 50.0 on one site I use). So I agree it is difficult, I just dont differentiate the two sites

do they not have certain popular downloads that are 'free' which still affect your +ratio if you seed them?

like downloading episodes of eastenders or some other shite on thebox.biz to up your ratio.

Yeah they do. They also have a top 10 list to show what the most popular torrents are currently. Its still not easy, but they do allow for ratios of under 1.0 so they at least acknowledge that its difficult.

I used to use Oink back in the day, was a fantastic place to get non mainstream stuff. Finding MP3's is of no use to me these days as I'm old and miserable and hate all the new music. Everything is dubstub shite and I HATE dubstep with a passion

On a more serious note I have been given free access to a seed box my mate owns. Not using torrents for so long I never kept any of my old accounts open to the private trackers. Does anyone have any invites to black cat games? That's probably the only one I would actually use.

UKNova has now gone.

Quote:
To the members of UKNova.

UKNova is being forced to change. We have been issued with a "cease and desist" order by FACT (The Federation Against Copyright Theft).

Despite our efforts to cooperate with the UK media companies, FACT have stated: "ALL links or access to content provided by UKNova are infringing, unless it can be proven that explicit permission from the copyright holder for that content has been obtained".

Whilst we believe that they are wrong both legally and morally on account of the strong 'no commercial content' stance that we have always taken, we are not in a position to be able to risk lengthy and costly court battles to prove this. Therefore we have no other option but to close down the trackers. It has not been an easy decision to take, but it is apparently our only option.

The forums will remain open for business as usual. Torrents and their associated pages will disappear over the next few hours.

Our heartfelt thanks go to all, past and present, who have worked tirelessly, often thanklessly, for the good of our community.
