I don't think it'll move that quickly as long as people still want cutting edge graphics. Even if tablets can do what a 7970 can do now in five years one presumes there'll be an even fatter capability on desktops of the day. I really want a convergence of google glasses and my games pc for example. I'm wearing a headset all the time I'm playing so why not have a sexy iron man style floating hud in front of me with game info/mumble etc augmenting my monitor?

PC's just allow such a rapid development pace that consoles and tabs will always lag behind a bit. I guess the only time that changes is when bandwidth improves to the point where the tab/glasses etc are just a delivery device for a fat virtual pc that you rent somewhere.

People keep claiming the PC will die, yet it never seems to manage to.

I think the difference with the current state of tech and the age olde argument on the death of the PC, is that everything was still seperate and you where making a choice between one or other.

A PC could do everything, a console would play games, a phone would make phonecalls. Now with such a convergence of technology, all these other devices can do the same tasks that your PC can do. You can watch films on your console, you can mix music on your tablet, you can play games on your phone.

I agree with Nersh that the PC will always be the cutting edge, but it's gradually going to become more niche because the only reason to get a top of the range PC would only be for gaming reasons. In the past, the average family could justify a £1000 PC because as well as running the latest games, it would make Word run faster and you could now watch movies on there! Woo!

Now, a PC for £200 would do all those other things, just without the latest games. But then again so can your tablet...

Sod all that Tech! I just want it that when I look at my actual monitor there are several apps floating around next to it and above it! I just don't have enough desktop!

Get a multiscreen setup then. Far cheaper.

The whole point is NOT needing another couple of 27 inchers and a desk to put them on. Plus it would be cool as fuck.

On an advert posted yesterday, it looks like Valve may be going into hardware after all.

There's a kickstarter going around for a company looking to make a wearable VR helmet. One that actually works. Perhaps that's the way they will be going.

There's a great interview on Eurogamer with Carmack about Oculus Rift from E3. Excellent read for the technologically challenged.

Also, that advert reads more like being angled at input devices.

Just looked it up - that may indeed be the one my friend mentioned. He's put in enough dough that will get him one of the prototype headsets whenever it's ready. The reason I think it might be the same one is that he mentioned that it will be out the box compatible with Doom 3. I believe this might be the one:

That headset would be really cool if the resolutions weren't so low. Just think it'll spoil the possible immersion when it's full of low res jaggies. Also, why the hell didn't they just go the whole hog and stick some headphones in it too? Wearing separate headphones will probably get sore quite fast with that thick strap trying to jostle for position on your cranium.

The Valve console was always coming though, seems to me it'll be just like a shuttle PC in a custom box with Linux pre-installed and Steam automatically booting up with the 10 foot interface. Valve seemed determined to go down the fuck Microsoft road. Doubt Gabe will get invited to any Microsoft Alumni parties.

I would think the copy protection would only be in the Steam application, doesn't really make any difference what platform it's on.

I only ask because Android seems to have been such a disaster from a DRM perspective. I thought the OS had some impact on that, but I am the layest of laymen...

I think the decision not to neuter the proliferation of apps is intentional on googles part, hard to specifically say why but I assume they're banking on the rapid of android and it's apps due to ease of installation making better progress against apple's market share and would rather be an open market at the cost of quality than stand in the way of someone clicking ok. Devs will cite cases where it's harder to make money of android apps vs itunes but that doesn't seem to be enough to dissuade the vast majority.

My brother has never been able to play FPS's in 2d without much the same result. I'm prepared to work on my sealegs if it means I can sit in a mech cockpit without getting the plywood out.
