"Every generation of Dalek" in new Who series

The whole lot apparently, from the earliest prototypes to the most recent chunkier variety-hopefully the story is up to par...

Thumbs up

Well, I rather enjoyed that, nicely done indeed, and, at the end,

  Spoiler: highlight to read
leaving the entire Dalek race with no clue or memory as to who the Doctor actually is. Although I bet someone will tell them, then they'll be right pissed off

Good ending to a pretty decent opening ep. Looking forward to her becoming doc's assistant.

Twigged early that she wasn't real. Other than that it was a good solid start. Amy and Rory are a bit tired now so hopefully letting them go will let the storys go off on their own.

I'm not enjoying Moffat's writing much now, it's all very formulaic, the characters are pretty one dimensional, you get no history around them like you did with a lot of the characters in RTD's tales and you can see the "plot twists", if you can call them that, coming from a mile off.

I'm thinking he's maybe been told to write more to kids than adults but dumbing it down too much is gonna ruin it.

Apparently the girl in this first episode is the same actress that's his new companion/assistant, whatever you want to call her, but how's that going to work? She's a Dalek and, as we've been informed many times in the past, the Doctor can't go back in someone's personal timeline to correct something, so presumably that means either she's not playing the same character which would be a completely bizarre casting fuckup (although Karen Gillan was one of the hand maidens in the The Fires of Pompeii, but she wasn't cast in the same bloody season as another character), or he's just going to completely ignore the premise he's already introduced (i.e. the personal timeline thingy).

Either way it's quite amateurish and not well thought out. It just feels like his writing is getting in the way of his being a celebrity now and the writing is woefully losing out.

The production also seems to be getting way too ambitious and it's losing the character of the show that we've all known for years, which is one of the reasons it's so well loved, cos it's not "up it's own arse" like some other big shows but rather has always concentrated on characters that you can get to know and love. Now we've got massive environments appearing just for the "oooh look at that" factor, like the huge Dalek statue, why the fuck would the Daleks build that? They have no emotions, so they would feel no pride or vanity, was it just there to scare people? Surely the Daleks could do that themselves or is it just there as eye candy with little thought other than "oooooh loook big things!"?

The Daleks of old were always interested only in function rather than form cos they're purely analytical and robotic, which is why their ships were always sparse bare places with only the technology they needed (plus it made sense for cheaper sets too of course), now we've got Wrath of the Titan type statues, loada bollocks!

Also, weren't we already told in previous stories that Skaro is time-locked, like the Timelords were?

I'm not down with the Dr Who lore but he can't revisit times in his own timeline that he has already visited. Nothing stopping him from revisiting someone else's. He's always bumping into people who have met him before either in his current incarnation or a former one.

Re RTD vs Moffat

I'll say one thing for Moffat, his storylines are a hell of a lot less down your throat gay. I can't believe how much gay that man can crowbar into a story that really doesn't need gay in it. I note there was just a hint of gay in the most recent one where dalek girl called the doc the name of a former lover/crush which was a girl. As for how they'll write her in as the companion, it'll be something ludicrous and far fetched as that's the nature of the beast.

Well I take the exact opposite view, pretty much. I think Moffat has taken the whole thing up several notches, story-wise. Look back at the eps from the RTD days, most of it's bullshit histrionics with the sort of endings that you got in the worst Star Trek eps; 'let's connect this doohickey to this thing, turn this and BLAM!'. He wants shot for involving Catherine Tate, and although I admire Bernard Cribbins, the way his stuff was written makes me cringe.

That Dalek ep with Davros is a classic example of the above-a potentially great story idea ruined by the "let's have the cast all running round screaming-that'll be exciting" mob.

I've been a fan of Who since my earliest recollection of seeing it, back in the Patrick troughton era, and it's only now, imo, that we're even starting to get back to that kind of consistent storytelling.

Fair play to Davies, he was the one who pushed hardest to get Who back on the tv in the first place, but Moffat handles the whole thing a lot better for me, and I'm not just defending him because he's Scottish

The doctor cant go back into his own timeline and change it.. anyone elses fair game.
Martha Jones/ Freema Agyeman was in the series before she became a companion.she worked at torchwood, you've already mentioned the ginger, its been done before but this is probably the set up as to how this one becomes the companion.
Skaro was time locked in the old universe, before they reset it at the end of Smiths first series,so who knows.
Think your just getting to old to enjoy it tbh..i could pick holes in it all day if i wanted. Ie why not just drop nukes down the tunnels to the planet instead of the Dr, but i dont I just sit back and be entertained.

maybe there is a time-space-paradox involving the new companion and amy pond in a soapy shower scene.
if that's the case....I will suspend my disbelief for the sake of the show!

Hmmm, a no-holes barred, time-travelling jelly wrestling scene involving all the tidiest assistants (in their prime, of course), stark naked, plus some big toys....

Yeah...

Ohhh yeah....
