We're not quite as bad as the yanks on the 'military spending with no seeming end to it, and little thought about the eventual bill. Not to mention little consideration about whether or not it's all actually necessary' point.

Chinese military strategists actually find this quite comical, especially as they're gaining from the interest on the loans, a wee bit like Italian bankers used to, back in Medieval times when English Monarchs, amongst others, needed finance for their military "adventures". Those interest payments basically financed the Italian renaissance...

The thing is; the stuff that might well win any potential future conflict-and I'm talking more about international war, rather than the assymetric "bash the terrs" thing-could be relatively cheap. War robots, and lots of them, capable hackers-and lots of them, combined with decent manned airpower, quality elite/special forces, and cruise missiles fired from subs.

Well, what state are the F22's produced in, I'm guessing a swing state with high unemployment. So promising to buy more, means (at a high cost) reactivating the production lines, employing and training staff who are currently out of work for a duration of a few years. Once there trained they may be able to shift jobs once the orders complete/cancelled/reduced.

I don't see it happening without massive US support. The Israelis could probably hit one or two targets , but given the distance, other countries in the way , fortified nature of stuff like the nuclear facilities, they would struggle. Thats without takign into consideration whatever forces Iran would put in the air , SAM's etc

Without a proper next gen leap in combat technology I don't see Iran or North Korea being attacked conventionally any time soon.

I mean set their Uranium enrichment policy back a few years, nothing as drastic as an invasion or troops on the ground. Mitt has already said in his numerous speeches if he is elected the "Iranian problem" will be solved with force if necessary.

The U.S in giving Israel the green light will support the attack, either through intel, satellite observation or a few carriers in the gulf to launch from. Half the Yank fleet is already there to stop the Iranians blocking the straight of hormuz which they have threatened to do for a while now.

I figured you meant the nuclear sites, I'd be very surprised if the US had that active a role. Intelligence and observational support sure , but having Israeli fighters roll off American carriers would be turning it up to 11.

The Yanks, believe it or not, "did a Eurofighter", the F-22's production is spread all over the bloody place, components-wise, in just about every state, with main assembly at three plants.

About 5,600 Lockheed employees worked on the F-22 program at its peak in 2005, including 944 in Marietta. The current number is 1,650 companywide, 930 in Marietta. More than 200 Marietta jobs have been trimmed this year, and more cuts could be coming next year, said union local chief Denise Rakestraw.

However, 600 Marietta employees will handle technical support and modernizations for the existing F-22 fleet. Others will move to other Lockheed programs including the C-130J and the F-35.

F-22 Raptor facts:

- Built at three Lockheed facilities: Marietta (final assembly) Fort Worth, Texas, and Palmdale, Calif.

- Operational fleet: 187; 195 total Raptors produced (8 as test planes)

- 5,600 Lockheed employees on project at peak period in 2005; 944 in Marietta;

- F-22s based at: Langley Air Force Base, Va.; Elmendorf AFB, Alaska; Holloman AFB, N.M.; and Hickam AFB, Hawaii.

Re; a possible Iranian strike; that, to my knowledge, will be harder than many (certainly in the US) might think. Those facilities are buried feckin' deep. The yanks have been working for years on an advanced penetrator munition to do the business. The Bush administration wanted a small nuke for the job, Congress told them to behave themselves (the money for same, iirc, being diverted to the Reliable Replacement Warhead programme for the bulk of their nuclear arsenal).

So, if they seriously wanted to interdict Iran's nuclear capability, I don't really think they could do it solely from the air.

Unless, of course, they have something black up their sleeves..
