I've just got up to On a Rail too, it's been pretty impressive so far. I'm surprised how polished it is and it plays really well.
The only thing I don't like is they seem to have changed the weapon dynamics. Because the soldier AI is a bit wonky they seem to be able to shoot you through the eye of a needle whenever you are anywhere in the area and they kill you almost instantly. Meaning that pretty much all weaponry apart from the Magnum is a waste of time! It's not helped by the sub machine gun being made worse over longer distances. Think I might download the original to see how it compares now. |

You need Steam with a source-based game already installed to play it, but if you already have it on your comp you could bung it in offline mode I spose.

Haha it did make me think of that time I had to send you HL1 on CD. I think it would be a pain though as it installs to steam and it tried to download SDK for me. But I think its supposed to work if you have a source game installed as I cancelled the SDK download. I can try burning the files but not sure it will install offline. |

Just finished it and overall I think it was brilliant. They have done an amazing job considering it was all done for free and it played like it had been professionally developed. I barely came across any bugs other than one small point where I got stuck behind a door.
The only negative point was they messed up the combat a bit. The combat was more hectic and solid on the original game. It was virtually impossible to avoid getting hit by half the projectile stuff on BM and it became a case of just making sure you shot stuff as soon as it spawned. The soldier AI was a bit of a joke where they would shoot you instantly, but it was still comparable if not better to a lot of retail games about at the moment. The weapons were all over the place, the shotgun works as well long range as it does point blank and the sub machine gun is garbage with a secondary fire which doesn't seem to work half the time. I was excited when I finally got the laser gun, only to realise they had somehow made that garbage too! Some of the set piece stuff looked much more spectacular but a little bit of the atmosphere was lost. The tappy monster was a lot less scary, i think it was due to the lack of clangs and bangs like someone was bashing a radiator with a spoon behind you. I think they would be better off not finishing it because Xen was mostly rubbish anyway and it would further spoil it! If they had nailed the combat i'd say it would have definitely been better than HL1 but it just didn't quite surpass it for me i'm afraid. But considering how good HL1 is, to come close is quite an achievement. |
