Personally I take fitness target thread to be 'getting in shape'. What shape is up to you.

Fitness wise. I can run for longer than I used to be able to. I'm still a fat bastard though. Cardiovascular fitness can be increased quite quickly compared to weight lifting and muscle mass. Each to their own though.

Does anyone know how much running 5km 2-3 times a week will affect my trying to put on muscle mass?

It shouldnt m8, as long as you are not into negative cals.

HIT cardio is normally best when bulking, just make sure you are eating pre and post cardio with quick digesting carbs

Time for some new trainers me thinks.

Body Building not good for fitness? complete bullshit. Yes if you fail to bring cv into your work out you will not work the heart muscle as well as a runner. It also a complete fallacy that the heart is not used in weight lifting, weight lifting has also been proven to reduce LDL (BAD) and increase HDL (Good).

The lifting of weight is essential to increase your odds of having decent mobility in later life. Muscle mass increase stability and the lifting of weights also helps with bone density which in turn helps slow down your bones turnings into dry twigs that snap with the slightest knock (see the increase of bone breaks in females to males in later life due to the females natural bone fatigue). Weight lifting for women is essential.

Weight lifting also gives your metabolism a massive boast which lasts longer than that from a CV work out.

Its complete ignorance to state that those who lift weights do not work out with CV anyway as most the big boys I know have at least one fat burning session a week.

Get off your fucking high horse if people want to put down what they can lift then so be it, ignore the posts but for some of us its an interesting insight to the successful routines these guys use.

weight lifting = fitness, CV = fitness, motor skills = fitness, flexability =fitness (all very essential)


Ignorance = no excuse

For me true fitness is bringing everything together, but I will never turn my nose down at someone who loves weight lifting or the guy who can 10 miles like a pro they all work hard and show commitment and the majority will share what they know with you.

What surface you hitting mate? try and run on soft surfaces tramic screws my shins ups. Also if you can go and visit a proper sports shop and see if they can advise you on your running style as the positioning of your footwill increase the odds of shin splints. You made need a certain shape of footwear or a mould in the trainer to position your foot correctly ( I have little to no arch in my feet ..running hurts)

I started on a fitness routine a round 4-5 months ago. No weights, no running.. just watching what I eat (being a bit more aware of how many calories i'm taking in), and doing some very basic exercises (sit ups, push ups - ie. using my bodies weight against itself, best method). In addition to this i'm throwing in some simple Yoga stuff (has massively helped my back - long story) as well - all in i'm spending around 10 mins a day.

I've already got a 6 pack starting to show and have definitely lost weight.

Am I fit - hell no - not yet - but getting there

Depends on what you define as "fit" - could I run 10 miles? totally no way. Do I want to? - not really, and do I care? - no.

If being "fit" means that you simply aren't carrying around any, or to much excess "baggage" and perhaps are generally physically active then thats where I want to be. How that is achieved, for me, is pretty much irrelevant.

Indeed you used diet, flexability (yoga), resistance (weight lifting). All of which r important, you use CV and motor skills daily i.e walking and balance.

Just something as simple as cutting out chocolate bars and replacing chips with spinage and veg can make significate difference to health, wellbeing and long term fitness.

Did you know that a large number of back complaints come from lack of flexability in the legs.

19st 12 on weigh in.

Cardio been upped to 45 mins 5 days a week. Mostly HIIT on stair machine, absolute killer they are.
Carbs slightly dropped see how it takes me.

So far so good, heading in the right direction anyway.

I've had serious problems in my back since I was about 14. Finally saw a physio last year after it start to affect my work and got told it was all related to my glutes being too tight and my hamstrings compensating and then getting to a point of them not being able to handle the strain then that caused my back to go pop.

Now I have to stretch twice a day for at least 10 minutes to avoid injury when I play sport.
