Kerbal Space Program

http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/

This is great, design a rocket and try to get into space and back again. I'm hopeless and haven't even made it into orbit yet, hundreds of Kerbals lie dead

This is such bloody good fun. Only just got around to it and wish I had played it before now. I started with a liquid propellant main and solid launch. Didn't get high but was impressed all the same. One problem I didn't plan for was landing. It came in like an ICBM!

Roll on a couple of weird and wonderful explosive creations and I finally got into space when I realised using the struts I could cluster engines together and that sas thing would do my steering. Sadly no kerbal survived. My parachute someone ended up going off too early.

Tomorrow I'm going to build a proper multi stage multi engine monster!!

Landed on Mun. At 300m/s. Not technically landing in one piece mind.

closest i've got to the moon so far is a 1000000x timewarp fly past that just missed at great speed - that flight definitely could have achieved a landing (at 10000mph)

heh I just bought the full game. Better graphics and all new bits. Along with the game remembering where bits are that you dump. For example I managed to slingshot a booster stage out past the moon earlier.
Oh and you get the bits to make space planes. There are people making things like Spaceship 1 and White Knight.

My best so far has been to sit on the runway then explode. That one was followed by attempt 2 where I shot down the runway, took off and did backflips into the sea.

Funniest £10 I have ever spent.

My space programme continues apace - although I must be running out of astronauts by now

i think to actually reach the moon properly needs actual maths and I'm far too lazy - my current strategy of trying to wing it isn't working.

Bigger and bigger rockets it is I think !

Get an add on called mechjeb. Basically an auto pilot. Handy for doing stuff you know how to do but are lazy about.

Price increase when.16 is released. Going up to $18. 0.16 brings an update to the scale of all the rocket parts to bring them all inline. Also adds 1,2 and 3 seat capsules. Both of these were necessary due to them bringing EVAs into the game. So now you can go to the moon and have a wander. Or get out and swap into another ship. Rather looking forward to this update. With luck 0.17 will bring docking. Until then being able to leave a ship and hop in a rescue one will do!

I've found the map button and bothered to work out the instrument panel at last as such I've two succesful moon interventions - these are more commonly known as high speed crashes, but its good enough for me

That's how it starts! Next you will be landing. Then one day you might even get them home. Alive.

Duna (Mars) is good. You will need either a powered landing or parachutes and a powered landing. Or you could go balls out and build a space plane and glide it in.

Couple of mods I use are:

Mechjeb - An auto pilot. Handy but you still need to understand what you want to do to make it take you to the planets. Does have a landing autopilot that is an absolute must if you want to build a base without your head exploding in frustration. You can put the ship in a parking orbit, type the co-ordinates or click on the map and press land.

Crewtank - A fuel tank that can hold 5 kerbals. Handy for rescue missions.

You can get both from the forum or from http://www.kerbal.net/

I also am playing about with this nifty rover

And a stand in until proper docking comes along is this

And a general FYI the price is now $18 as of release 0.16 and still worth every penny. Release 0.17 brought in new parts along with several new planets including equivalents of Mercury, Venus, Mars and Phobos and Jupiter and 4 of its moons.

It also brought in cockpit views for the one man pod and the aircraft pod. The others are coming soon.

Get that crewtank addon and then build a ship to rescue him!

At the moment I have a base at the northern Munnar Arch on Mun with a robotic probe (bits come in mechjeb), a Rover, and a habitat that is built from 3 crewtanks.
The probe is a small one way craft that I use to find the landing spot.

A good return vehicle, that I use on the habitat delivery vehicle is to put a small fuel tank ontop of the one man capsule, 2 pylons off of it holding two more small tanks and then attach two small engines to the bottom of these tanks. Finally add two parachutes to the top or your could use a decoupler to remove the whole lot from the top and put two small chutes on the sides of the capsule.

I will try and look out a picture.
