War of the Roses

What is it?
Its basically counter strike with melee weapons and medieval ranged weapons. You get two teams and fight it out in death match or conquest mode.

How does it play?

I will admit that when I first played it after purchase I thought it was shit but just like cs all those years ago you find yourself going back to it and suddenly its 4 am in the morning, you have work in 4 hours and the wife is not impressed as you try and sneak into the bed.

Combat
This is a game of tactics, if you rush in like a loon you may well get a kill but your soon be stabbed in the back and finished off with a dagger to the eye.

In melee you press down the left mouse button while moving your mouse in he direction of the strike back for stab,up for overhead and left and right for slashing.
If you have shield hold down the right mouse button this will allow you block but your shield will break after a series of strikes.

Once you knock someone down you get the option to execute by pressing E, the execution animation plays for 5 seconds in which can be interrupted but if you succeed you get a lovely gruesome kill played out in third person.

Ranged it not easy its takes skill to get the a kill. Two options r available here Bow and Crossbows. Bows have quick reload but need more precise shots to hit flesh while crossbows take an age to reload (can be quicker if you succeed with the active reload mini game) but can go through most Armor.

It sounds simple is that all there is to it?

Hell no you get coin for kills which you can use to buy new gear and upgrades, you can also buy fighting style that give you slightly different stats with your melee weapons i.e one allow for a faster strike but less damage whilst the other lets you charge up a strike and hit like a truck. You can customize your armor and you family seal. After a while you also get to unlock new weapons like maces, spears, pole-arms and fuck off massive two handed hitty things of doom.

To be cont.

Total Biscuit review of it. He compares it to mount and blade as well as chivalry.

The game's quite fun. It's better than warband multiplayer, simply because in warband you're so used to having a fantastic single player character that your multiplayer character is shit in comparison.

Anybody wants to kick arse together, find me on steam. Got cousin, brother and a mate with it so we run around and rape.

I bought Chivalry last night (£15.50 from Gamersgate) after watching the Total Biscuit comparison etc). I've played a few hours and it's great. The 1st person close up combat is refreshing and bloody as hell. Highly recommended.

Melee is better in chivalry, but the archery isn't as good. Overall chivalry clinches it. WOTR has had too many stupid balancing changes made within the first couple of weeks that do little to balance anything

Green Man Gaming currently have 25% off downloads so it's £11.63 until 9/11/12.
