The way aliens introduce themselves now is really starting to piss me off. They move into your field of vision and then magically get another turn so that they can either run away before you kill them, or manouver into extremely dangerous positions that you havent prepared for because they werent there a second ago. This is particularly a problem with Chryssalids.

Xenonauts hits beta soon. It cannot come soon enough.

actually in a way it's a good thing as it made me fire up the original.

FUCKING CHRYSALIDS!!! Forgot what a problem those bastards were in close quarters.

Yeah not only are they complete fuckers to kill, they turn one of your men into them too! So not only do you lose a man but they gain one. Really hated terror sites with those things.

Xenonauts does look a lot more in depth. This does seem a bit simplified... Really missing the time units. Rap touched on it, as you may want to edge forward 1 tile - but you've then used half your turn.

Is there even any point in using snipers? (or any of the other classes for that matter, the shotgun/scatter weapons stuff just seems completely pointless) The snipers don't really seem to have much better accuracy than rifles anyway and not being able to use overwatch as standard is a major loss. It seems better to just load up on rifles, move forward in blue areas, keep overwatch on and you just kill everyone that way.

I really wish you only got the option to take a shot if you ACTUALLY HAVE LOS rather than when you soldiers somehow seem to know an alien is behind a wall, then happily shoot at the said wall when you try and take a shot.

Snipers are amazing with squadsight, plasma sniper rifles and S.C.O.P.E.S equipped. Before I deleted my old save game where I was just walking through missions with 6 colonels alive, I was taking 2 snipers on every mission and positioning them in the best spots I could, but at the rear of the map. Looks back at the previous page for the screenshot I posted with a guy on 62 kills from 22 missions. Thats what a sniper can do.

As for shotguns, theyre amazing. Use your "Run and Gun" ability properly and you can eliminate even the toughest aliens in a single shot. Obviously theyre shit from distance and theyre virtually useless when putting your assault soldier on overwatch, but get them into the right position and theyre devastating

What Minty said. Ashen must've done something good in his previous life. Useless, cowardly ashen from my previous campaign has been reborn as badass "shotgun" mikey this time round. Run and Gun + Lightning reflexes is great. I also love using Flush as well. Put everyone on overwatch, then have Ashen flush them out from cover to get raped. Snipers however seem to be very hit and miss. Sometimes you get a good map layout and they clean up, others you spend all game trying to get a shot off.

Skeleton Armour/Archangel Armour + elevated positions often resolves that issue

still undecided whether to get this or not,
My biggest love for Xcom 1 and 3 was getting a soldier levelled up so badass you didnt need support troops
XCOM 1 i got 1 guy maxed out in every area so he could literally take a base out by himself (apart from the high ranking sectiod ones that mind controll you )
He earned the name Vlad-IMFUCKINGNAILS

In XCOM 3 i got my ultimate 4 man team titled Horsemen of the Apocalypse - With Deaths main acheivement when he survived a building falling on top of him

I was hoping that Xcom would play as a better version of jagged alliance, but its very very different.

Its simplified turn based, which I kind of like bar a few things. I'm not overly happy with the vanishing of different shot types and minor movement should be more tolerable. But the cover system is pretty cool.

The absence of weapon variety is a bit poo, but the loss of ammo and micromanaging grenades I won't miss

The simplicity of the experience tree is also pretty naff even if some of the actual abilities are pretty cool.

mostly though I miss just annihilating half the map "just in case" with rockets

I'm going to be trying out a mod for JA:BiA which claims to make the whole game a bit more credible. This is probably not the place to be talking about it but meh to XCOM. Meh!

I was also tempted until I read this thread, though I only played a small amount of the original XCOM series. However now I might pick it up when it's in a sale but will otherwise give it a miss.

It's still excellent! Just in a 'great in it's own right' sense, rather than as a completely sound remake of the original.

It's still the best turn based strategy/tactical game since Civ 4 and Xcom Apocalypse, imo.

I like it, just seems more simple than I remember. But then, that's not the object of the devs.

Anyone tried the MP yet?

As remakes of classic squad tactics games go this is the far superior. Its probably just a couple of bad design choices away from true greatness. I think most of the complaints people have are based in the context of "im still playing the shit out of it i just wish this was more like this.." rather than something which makes it worth avoiding

Aye, Goody's right. It's niggling little things that irritate, rather than big gaping flaws. Dishonoured is the best FPS (though if you play it like one you're doing it wrong) I've played in years and years, and yet I've played xcom twice as much. It's highly Moreish. You can't help but go, "one more turn. My shiny new armour is nearly researched!" then realising 3 more hours have passed.

well I bought this yesterday
I played the demo and thought it was cack....too scripted and boring.
then the 2nd mission gives you more control and I realised that the cut scenes are dynamic which cheered me up

the absolute cover malarkey? well the way I see it is that even if you're in cover...you're not. as it's turn based and yes there is overwatch but you're still moving effectively and popping your head in and out. so invisible to the enemy behind a box?? no, not if they saw you go there or were informed of your position.

so I'm giving it a go
I played TFTD, and Xcom apocalypse which was quasi turn based I think. I even enjoyed interceptor and remember carrying the uber sun blaster missile or something
so I hope this is more of the same but better.
obviously some things have changed.
Shots are based on percentage which is fine...anyone remember Laser Squad?? that was awesome and means that part of the game is RPG and character stats which suits me fine
Overwatch is a little annoying...because they don't seem to see anything! but I can work on that.
What else? quite enjoyed last night where I got people advancing slowly...then poisoned and she panicked...ran across the map and nailed a sectoid in the face with one burst....hysterical headshot....

so far, so good. only played 1-2 missions really so lots and lots to dig into.
The cut scenes are a little annoying, thank god you can skip through them
and the music...sounds like it was lifted from the latest Deus Ex.
Of course there is a lot of American flag waving but I can live with that.

I don't think I've played many single player games in the last few years.
bioshock, portal, deus ex...that's about it really...so I'm looking forward to this

God, a few casualties really fucks you up doesn't it? Ashen died saving a hostage, and 2 more were wounded in a terror mission. had to go in with 3 relative noobs the next mission and 2 of them died (Homer to an grenade, and jtz who panicked at seeing his mumble buddy get ganked and ran into a muton) and the rest of my squad got shot up. Not too long a recovery time for them though, so hopefully i can avoid any missions. Luckily, the reward for that mission was an Assault class captain. Goodbye "Shotgun" Ashen, hello "Cheaty Git" Mr Skiff.

It's definitely moreish. I sit there thinking it's a bit shit and get annoyed with stuff which should be better than realise I have still been playing it for a few hours.

I think it is a very good game and worth buying, it's just, it could have been an amazing game with a few little tweaks here and there.

Yeah Im pretty much with T-Bag on this. Its a lot of fun, but the original wasnt really broken, so why did it need fixing?

There were some things that needed improvement, such as allowing you to equip soldiers with the weaponry and equipment you want BEFORE you go on the mission. That way you dont have to manually assign Stun Rods to every soldier before each and every single mission.

Or psionic aliens not being able to mind control your men before youve even seen your first alien.

Or Ethereals/Mutons not showing up in the first month.

Fix issues like these and you effectively have a damned near perfect game. Instead they had to dumb it down entirely for the console tards. Surely the sales success of this game indicates that we are happy to play games that arent generic CoD clones and want a bit of substance to our gaming right? Hell, Id say that the success of the pre-alpha funding and kickstarter campaigns for Xenonauts proved that (Which fixes all the issues mentioned above btw, whilst providing extra depth in the research and manufacturing processes. I have a Xenonauts boner, I know.)

Nearly completed it and enjoyed it but...
  • Far to few alien types
  • Limited research and engineering
  • Crap interceptor mini game, would have prefered a SWG style mini game tbh
  • Rubbish terror missions save i.e the civilians ok..oh first turn 7 get wiped out in the fog of war
  • To few missions types
  • Why can we not fight along side AI controlled Army troops or even take control of local forces.
  • The missions needed alot more different tile sets, I had a mission in the middle east with a massive liquor store with American police cars.
  • Every ship I have shot down in a low populated area, wheres the risk of a shoot down hitting a city and the alien sending in ground troops for a resuce mission
  • No risk of base attack..uh hello aliens we have a central command that you could quite easily take out and pillage to your hearts content.
  • One base and childish base building
  • Lack of enemy unit types...not a single alien sniper.

It could have been an epic classic but just falls short of glory if I had to give it marks out of ten 6/10 if your a fan of the orginal 7/10 if your new to the series.

2.To have the worst of luck when playing in groups, although having the best intentions an act occurs which usually results in multiple deaths, maimings or destruction of property.

Here's a pretty great review that encapsulates a lot if what we've been saying: http://www.quartertothree.com/fp/201...ears-to-write/

Cheers Minty.

ETA: Aliens Vs Humans on the ipad - is essentially the old X-com. Wish I'd found it before buying the PC one - would have done the job until that Xeno comes out!
