Not that polticians are a breed frequently renowned for their integrity but Romney's policy inconstancy is the only constancy about him. I've really not seen any particular substance or vision to his ticket other than: 'he isn't the other guy'. Which ironically was the key proposition of his former opponents as the Republican party mechanically made its way through the entire prosopective candidate field last year.

That's just the reality of trying to be elected by a bunch of reactionary extremists. Fundamentally I think Romney is a principaled guy who wants do the right thing. I completely accept that a large group of people (likely a majority) don't agree with his view of the world, but he's no bumbling idiot. I wish he (or anyone else) could bring the GOP to the left, particularly on social issues, but he's about as moderate a candidate as they could find in a field of mediocre applicants. Maybe it would have Sen best for them to field a completely wacko candidate and lose even harder, but I prefer Romney's fundamental view of the world, albeit one that has to stay hidden.

What i like best in my politicians is for them to stand up strongly for their principles. Whatever principles their advisers have told them are polling well on that particular day.

Hell, he's borderline liberal assuming that the real Mitt Romney is the one who was the governor of Massachusetts.

But yeah its the old Republican problem of turning their candidates batshit crazy. John McCain is a perfectly reasonable, sensible politician who stands up for what he believes in, even if that goes against the party line. Mitt Romney is a man who believed in helping those less fortunate and providing healthcare for all. Put either of them in a Presidential race and what do you get? McCain chooses Alaska McCrazytits as a running mate and (not directly, but his campaign did) says that his opponent is a Kenyan born terrorist. Romney decides to become so right wing that even Nick Griffin thinks he should tone it down a bit and changes his opinions every 24 hours. That wasnt hyperbole btw. He has actually been caught changing his opinions and policies in a 24 hour period on the campaign trail.

American politics is fucked up. Youre either extreme left or extreme right. If you want to be a moderate or a centrist, youre an unpatriotic terrorist loving Frenchman.

Thats the problem with American politics theres hardline red and blue states that they NEED to keep savvy to win.
So any true centrist progressive politician will get fucked at the presidential stage.

I think its actually the opposite tbh , theres hardline red and blue states that will vote for a small piece of spit if it comes from the right party which dont matter at all in the vote, all that matters is the swing state in which centre policies will play well. But in order to get elected by their parties (more so the republicans than the democrats) you have to pretend to be a total nutjob which inevitably comes back to bite you.
