Thumbs up

Critics seem to like it;

Roll on, I say, really looking forward to it, more so than any other film this year

The film is amazing as far as action films in general go. BUT, as a Bond film, I'm not too sure we'll look back at this one quite so fondly in 20 years time. Just my opinion.

I though it was a pretty damn good film and in it's 50th year a homage of sorts to a lot that's gone before.

I don't think they haven't tried to outdo the spectacular set pieces of previous films but those set pieces that were present were very good and the cinematography was gorgeous.

  Spoiler: highlight to read

The relationship between M and the agents she trained was a new aspect I'd never considered before and it helped to humanise Bond, rather than being a one-liner throwin sex machine as he has been portrayed in so many previous films.

I enjoyed it, though it definitely felt like a prequel or a precursor to something a little better. I liked the nods to past Bonds plus the leaving the door nice and open.

My first problem with it is for me, a James Bond film should be about him versus the bad guy. Not him and some mates vs the bad guys. I've never read the books so only can go by the films. Its Bond versus and this doesn't do that. My second problem with it is we don't get to see the main bad guy until after an hour has passed. Far too long to wait. Thirdly, the bad guy isn't some megalomaniac like Blofeld or Scaramanga. He's just a mentalist out for some personal revenge, something we saw Bond do in the last film. James Bond shouldn't need humanising. He has one job to do and has a licence to kill to go with it. You can't humanise a licence to kill ffs.

There were some genuine LOL moments that had me in stitches and the action sequences were pretty sweet but I immediately felt let down when I walked out of the cinema.

Finally setting up Ralph Fiennes character immediately takes away the mystery to how M will think, act, and react in future films. M is now wasted in future films... Rant Over and i'm fully aware i seem to be the only person in the world feeling this way lol

I enjoyed it ... but:

It was sad that Judi Dench has exited.

I got a little confused with Q commenting about "Were you expecting an exploding pen 007?", hinting at a new regime. But then at the end he met Moneypenny, indicating that it was an earlier Bond!

I left the theatre thinking great action film. But not a true Bond film.

The pen bit was just a playful callback to previous Bonds, 50th anniversary and all that

I wasn't hugely impressed, the action sequences, scale & locations were amazing as usual but the plot line was weak and I develop more antipathy towards the central characters as each film progresses.

  Spoiler: highlight to read
The ending left way to much of an A-Team taste in my mouth, in fact nothing in the last 40 minutes (car/scotland/alber finney) made any sort of sense at all

I don't think the 35 minutes of Bond fanchise related adverts at the start helped either.

wow you lot are harsh. I thought it was excellent, gritty and humorous. The bad guy was camp and OTT and was a modern villain in that he wasn't backed by a superpower or after world domination. Thought Javier Bardem played him rather well.

The complaint about Bond not being by himself is a bit off, he has whole armies with him at the finale in many films e.g. Goldfinger, You Only Live Twice, Moonraker etc

Having already disagreed with your first point, now I have to go on and disagree with everything else you've said!

revealing top baddie, i.e. he who is pulling the strings, earlier would ruin the pacing and mystery of what exactly was happening. Did you seriously want to know who it was within 15 minutes? Then the film becomes one long when is Bond going to get him, rather than a mystery that needs to be solved so Bond can find out who he is after and what their motives are.

Plus the point of M is generally only to send Bond on a mission and then moan at him. Mallory's M was established first as a potential brown-nosing bureaucrat but reveals his true colours/loyalties under pressure. That way in the next films we know M is OK. It is a bit by numbers but in the context of transition from M to another I think it worked. Do you really want to waste some of the next film establishing M's character, when in this film that is established as the main plot evolves?

in what way did it not make sense? Initially I assumed it was the DB5 he won in Casino Royale, so it was a bit cheesey it was kitted out as the Goldfinger DB5, but I think the whole cinema was close to cheering when he pulled back the lockup door. Scotland made sense in that he was going home to known ground, but also away from any innocents who could get killed

If I was being chased by a gang of 20 heavily armed men in a helicopter I don't think I'd have driven 500 miles in a 50 year old car with a pensioner hoping to MacGyver them all to death with exploding chandeliers in an abandoned country house with virtually no weapons aside from a calor gas cylinder with the explosive qualities of a small thermo nuke. This is the sort of behavior I'd expect from Roger Moore frankly, and they need to make their minds up what sort of film they are making.

I didn't think it was all bad but I was expecting so much more, but then again I wasn't impressed by Ironman or The Dark Night which pretty much everyone I know wanks off about so I suspect I don't represent your average film goer.

Randell, yes i did want to know. Its James Bond. There shouldn't be any mystery left if a 00 agent is called in. They are not THAT disposable to risk sending one in against an unknown enemy.

Blofeld wasn't revealed until the end of the third film he'd 'been' in. Sean Bean didn't turn up until halfway-ish through Goldeneye. Not exactly new territory to hold back the baddy for a bit

Wacthed it last night and came out of the cinema feeling thoroughly entertained. I thought Bardem seemed to have been watching a lot of Ledger in Dark Knight as the character he portrayed had that slightly off-kilter persona (though not to the extent of The Joker) with mannerisms and crazy-eye look.
