Comet on the edge

First we lose Best Buy, now looks like Comet will be next. Some very big names on the highstreet finding it tough, this just after JJB. Currys will be the only big electrical retailer left.

They've just said on the radio that existing vouchers won't be valid from Monday, when they go into receivership.

Excellent news. Currently I have to walk almost 20 meters to buy a coffee so I'm pleased to hear there'll be space for a couple more Costas.

Be nice if they do a fire sale but doubt that'll happen. The best thing about Currys/Comet (especially as I've found for TVs) is the fact you can see the size, etc in person. As much as I like buying online for the cost side of things, I'm a big fan of seeing something like that in the flesh so to speak. Mind you, after checking it out I'd still look online for the cheapest option.

thats a pretty safe bet i'd imagine.
I am however deeply upset about the misleading thread title. I was hoping for news on 2012 Armageddon inbound

New Cafe Nero opening on George Street just 100 metres from the existing one. Lord knows those old dears need more diuretic beverages to hasten their incontinence.

The coffee machine at work spews out a whole other kind of brown gold. It isn't pleasant.

There are two Comets not far from me, and both have a Game franchise inside that reopened after they went under. Double whammy for those employees

Not at all surprised, I worked there for 2 years and this is essentially the two type of employees there:

- 16-18 who work there as a part time job and know nothing about customer service or basically any of the products. You dont give a shit. If you're not a complete loser and aren't completely incompetent at life you will then move on to something better. These people actually make up the majority of the workforce.

- You stay there for the rest of your life as you basically aren't able to do anything else. You spend your life being pressured into selling extended guarantees. You still know nothing about any of the products, or customer service.

Comet near us (Preston Capitol Centre) are having a 50% sale from 1pm, I expect this will be nationwide.

I went into a Comet at Kinnaird retail park a few months back. Friday afternoon, and I was the only person in there not wearing a staff badge...

Did you spot that from driving by the place, or see it advertised anywhere?
May have to take a pass by the Halifax store and check it out just in case.

Father in law told us, he was on the Capitol Centre this morning, it was a sign in the Comet window. He sometimes doesn't read stuff properly though so I'm still trying to verify via other sources.

Website is offline as well, though it may have been like that for days.

I've rather cheekily just phoned Comet Halifax and asked...
He was all cheery answering the phone, then after me asking he was rather curt with his response along the lines of "No we're not"

Could just be the Preston store then, or a few selected stores, or the Father in Law was reading a chinese menu someone had stuck in the window.

Comet preston opening time is now 5pm. Sale could be uptp 50% or it could be an old sale sign, the details are sketchy at the moment and i can't get hold of anyone at the store.

Father in laws eyes clearly not up to scratch.

They put it back again, when I got to the store it had a sign up saying not open till tomorrow, the general consensus is that today is a firesale.

According to what I can find on interweb, the administrators are still going to try and run it as a concern and as such no fire sale.... Although as my local branch is a ten minute walk away I might pop down and have a look!

I went down to the Preston store for about 10.15, it was heaving but no queues (it opened at 10am), it's just a normal sale, most stuff can be had cheaper online still. Was after a microwave as ours has died but even their cheapest no-brand model was more than I could get a similar one for in the supermarket.

Goodbye Comet, with those prices it's no wonder you can't compete.
