Turns out this plan, as with every Brexit plan before it, did not survive first contact with the enemy. To no one’s surprise. Send them victorious!

No 10 have prepared a proposal for a "Temporary Customs Arrangement", where the UK would retain close ties to the EU for an indeterminate period after the end of the transition period - past 2020 - in case none of their hoped for customs fixes come to pass.
Thanks to everyone who voted for this colossal waste of time, money and energy.

On the assumption that Davis won't resign, it's impossible to understand the end of a conversation in which the PM doesn't sack him. It's over right?

Maybe. Although I’m not clear how the logistics will work if there’s a two month leadership contest alongside a rapidly ticking down Brexit negotiating clock.

Don’t know why he’s so worried to be honest, we’ve been promised an easy technological solution to the Irish border issue, so the proposed backstop shouldn’t be a problem.

Lots of speculation that he, liked every other Brexiter, has bottled it and backed down.

Speaking of which, apparently the text says the British government expects the transition period to end in 2021. In much the same way I expect to be a Premiership footballer by 2021. Who’s going to declare this a win for DD?

I thought the end of the transition period had already been agreed with the EU?

Sorry, the Irish backdrop transition period, which will apply in the highly unlikely event the U.K. doesn’t deliver a robust solution to the Irish border problem that remains as yet unseen.

Agreed. "expects" means it's a win for no one. DD will claim victory, but a pretty rubbish result.

That would be a little surprising given that what the draft says is categorically neither time limited nor legally enforceable - which were precisely his demands.
