G'day all, or goodnight really....

Hope all is well in the UK.

I'm having a great time in oz!

Spent the first week shopping and fishing and chilling and getting used to the heat.
I've just come in from drinking beer on the balcony wearing just my shorts

(its 1am here atm)
Bought some nice T-shirts and my father and I got some cheap fishing rods to try our luck on in the area below our apartment fishing with prawns as bait. ( apartment view : www.flosseh.co.uk/view.jpg )

Was quite chuffed! but we couldnt eat it due to the polution in sydney harbor at the moment, so I threw it back. (theres a ban on all fishing for consumption now in the area).

Went up to Cains on last thursday and got back last night.
The heat up there is unreal! its like 30oC at night and very humid! Its there rainy season at the mo but we were very lucky and had 1 day overcast and 2 sunny days!

We visited the Great barrier reef via a boat and then the following day we went on a Daintree river/rainforest cape tribulation safari type thing. The day after that we went on the largest skyrail in the world over the Baron rainforest.

Great barrier reef was amazing! I was just going to snorkel but my folks bought me a Scuba dive thing! (they went on a helicopter ride over it)
I was very nervous at first as ive never Scuba dived before but after a few minutes of breathing underwater and equalising pressure, you soon settle into it.! Feking amazing!!!!!! I loved it so much I bought another one 2 hours later!

Saw nemo and touched the sea anemaneieieeieiieie (sp), Fish the size of a small child just swim past you! Coral reefs everywhere! giant clams the size of a dog you can touch and alsorts!
I bought a underwater camera and took lots of snaps whilst being 15 metres down on the sea bed!. Going to get those developed tomorrow (fingers crossed they come out ok...) But for now heres a few shots my dad took with his camera:

I have a DVD of the dive also which some guy took.

The Daintree river/rainforest was a eye opener too!
Mangroves that can blind you with there sap! tree frogs! hand feeding kangaroos! Saw a 4.5 metre male Salty Crocodile!!!! walking through the rainforest! swimming in emmagin creek! making tea in a billy can! and a walk on cape tribulation beach to end it all

The last day in cains was spent on a 3.5 hour skyrail above the canopy in the baron rainforest that leads to Karanda village.
Very high cable car... not for the faint hearted.

I spent today on the beach in sydney (balmoral beach) and got very sunburnt on my feet and chest

Oh well, back to the balcony for more beers then bed

Sounds fantasic. Its the one place the strife wants to go. What is the temperature like as I am not very at dealing with the heat as I prefer it to be cold (like the last month or so).

It will be extremely hot there at the moment, espcially in the North where i think Sci currently is. Couple that with huge humidity unless you head inland a few hundred k's.

btw: without wanting to sound like im saying "Aus is better than NZ" (i've never been to NZ), they do have 40X more wildlife in AUS than NZ (most can kill you like Big K says, though still very interesting to see) and lots of huuuge mountains and vast amounts of rainforests/untouched land to walk through/explore , gb reef , ayers rock , amazing coastlines etc etc.. if thats what your into (then again it is about 90 times bigger than NZ)

Their mountains aren't huge! .. I climbed the highest mountain in the whole of australia and it was nothing more than a long walk (Mount Koziosko (i can't remember the spelling but it's pronounced like that)), it was a fun hike but not very taxing (height wise anyway , the walk we took was massive though, 18 miles as we decided to take the 'hard' route across the ridge backs). In the snowy mountains national park.

We went to western australia (dull and flat, except for the stirling range and porongorups, which are big rocks in a sea of flat plains), drove all round that, then over to sydney, drove round there and down to melbourne, then went round tazmania, then back up to sydney via the snowys.

It was a nice enough country, but nothing compared to new zealand, but i like dramatic scenery which every inch of new zealand is, whereas australia is - interesting bit if scenery, 400 miles of scrubland, interesting bit of scenery, 250 miles of scrubland, interesting town, 450 miles of scrubland, and such pathetic laws about food transportation and the laziest people i have ever met.

I think the big thing is i didn't see the east coast above sydney, which most people say is the best thing about australia so i guess we didn't see the best of it (although we went to tasmania and loved it, i guess we're just not into massive drives with nothing to look at except dust and dead trees, the great ocean road outside melbourne was great though, and the coast around western australia was nice, margaret river surf being particularly appealing).

On the wildlife front, australians lie a lot, their huge expanse of wildlife is usually just the same species but a variant, like most people would claim they had cats and dogs, australias would claim they had ginger cats, brown cats, mousy brown cats, big dogs, small dogs, medium dogs, etc.. so end up with 40x more wildlife than anyone else when infact there's very few totally different species, most of the wildlife we saw though was dead on the road, saw far more dead 'roo's than live ones, infact it was only when we got to the snowys that we actually saw a wild herd of them, scary looking buggers up close

We're hoping to go back to new zealand next year so i might try and stop off in australia again but this time head north from sydney and see if that's just what we missed out on

Prepare yourself for the heat and humidity in the north east though. Its like stepping into a sauna.

Even at night :/

Try to plan the trip for may to september time. They live for the winter up there....
which sounds odd to us. But you will see what I mean if you visit dec-april time.
