Yeah, it got discussed at moderate length on the Current Affair forum. It just all seems so detatched from the lives we lead its difficult to keep the deaths of 10,000 people from slipping from your mind when someone mentions beer or sales.

Think stalin said 1 death is a tragedy 1 million is a statistic and its sad but the deaths in Iran tend to fall into the catagory of just being a statistic because the number is just so high.

Its also sad to think that a quake of similar magnitude (higher infact) which hit the US killed 2 people. This might not be a very PC (or apt) thing to say but perhaps if they focused less on controlling their population through restrictive religous practicies and more on advancing as a country they may have buildings which could survive quakes of that strength.

It's the old "out of sight, out of mind" thing though, isn't it?

Think of all the innocents who die in an average year in all the famines, the ongoing wars etc, it's just when something like this happens it focuses your attention sharply....

no a hardline Theocracy is bad, it doesn't have to be Islamic to be repressive. Look at right-wing Christian groups in America or even apst european history.

I thought the amercain quake hit the coast though? where there was almost no population. Where as the Iran quake hit a massive town? o well. Think about it if the same quake hit Japan, i think there would of been quite a few deaths there as well :{
