Another gunz-boat thread!
After my last endevour for boating eutopia (http://www.trickery.net/vb/showthrea...ighlight=barge) i've been looking into buying a barge or dumb-barge.
![]() Grand design's a few show's ago for the midlands area did a show on a couple who had bought such a barge & where converting it into a house-boat. The couple got completely screwed on work done to the boat & were right spanners (de ja vu!). ![]() ![]() I've been watching several barge's of this type for sometime, they vary in cost from £7k to £9k. ![]() (after the grand-design show prices of the same barges in certain area's have risen to £15k) ![]() ![]() -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Cutting a long story short. I' was in talk's with a guy from london regarding a *Regent's-Barge 72" long by 14" wide boat*. I'd been looking for this sort of project for quite sometime & the guy was selling it for around £20k, it ended up been £27,600k. I' sent this email to the guy: Item: Regents Barge 72" x 14" No Reserve (220049440751) This message was sent while the listing was active. gunzenbomz is a potential buyer. Hello Pete, look l'm not one to play about with people, if you get the gear-box fixed so the boat can be moved & have it surveyed to prove hull realiablity. I'd be prepared to offer you in the region of £15,000 minimum. This can be dealt with by bankers draft, i'am not from a company or have masses of wealth but i'm fairly sure you can get a better offer elsewhere. I'd seriously like you to consider my offer even though it is very low. My future is on the water, i'm nearly 32-years old & would make your boat my home & make a new start in life for me. If you are tempted by my offer i'd certainly be perpared too visit the boat location, l do free charity work on a farm. So getting time off isnt a problem. Sincerely Paddy ==================================== And out of the blue i've just recieved this email; ==================================== Hi Paddy, The sale on my barge has fallen through yet again. I am prepared to lower the price considerably from what I was asking before so if you are interested then drop me a line. Regards -Pete ========== Link provided show's all picture's currently available http://www.club-moto.com/ebay/boat/outside1.html (Text from ebay auction for those interested in her spec) She is called Island Hope. She is 72" long, 14" wide and the interior gives approximately 750sq ft of living space. ![]() Island Hope was built in 1910 and is a Regents Barge – designed to go up and down the Regents Canal. It is flat sided and bottomed & perfectly suited for the larger UK canal system and European canals. The hull is ½ inch steel and in excellent condition. Island Hope was bought by the Isle Of Dogs youth group in the 80’s and converted to a basic youth centre with galley toilets etc. At that time it had a new 2 litre Bedford CF engine fitted – which still worked very well when I moved her to the current mooring. However the hydraulic gearbox has blown a seal so needs removing and the seal replacing. ![]() I bought Island Hope 4 years ago as a long-term project. Since then I have replaced the old wooden roof with a new steel roof which has large windows along the length of the roof line. This gives an internal ceiling height of over 10ft, which makes the interior very spacious. I lived aboard Island hope for a few months and fitted glass windows to half the length, insulated and boarded-out the hull and fitted a basic kitchen and spacious, functional bathroom. I have also fitted a lovely wood-burning stove that keeps the living-area cosy in the winter. ![]() So far, half the floor-space has been fitted out whilst waiting for the rest of the roof to be finished – as time and funds allowed. Island Hope was dry-docked and surveyed 2 years ago, and at this time, the hull was painted with epoxy anti-fouling paint. I have bought but not yet fitted a 2nd hand diesel boiler, and 6 radiators are ready to be fitted.Island Hope is currently moored near Enfield Lock on the river Lee (N. London). The mooring fee where she is currently is approx £325per month and I believe you can leave her there. It's very rough but more than ideal for what i'm looking for, a long-term boat house project plus been able to cruise the broadlane canals & rivers.
![]() It's far more cheaper than speading £30-40k on a dutch barge, but you cannot always get what you want; & i think its a step up from a empty dumb-barge ![]() ![]() Anyone got any thought's/help, advice or hinderance? ============== So my short-term plan is a vist into london for scouting out the boat & discussing engine work & plan's to drive it up to warwick which is a convenient area to where i live currently. It's quite a cool idea if you have the time to undertake a project like that
![]() Unfortunately, due to a lack on knowledge I couldn't offer you and advice on it. Good luck tho. |

I'm quite jealous! Wish I had the motivation/skills to do something like this. That looks like it would turn into a great living space. Good luck Gunz!

Bloody hell just noticed the mooring fee of £325 per month. Is that just because it's London?

That looks way to wide for the majority of locks on the grand union... are you sure you can cover the whole country in it ?
Surely you need a narrowboat for that.. Oh and one drawback of living on the canal is that it's populated by a fair few pikeys.... (it's not as idilic as it appears...) |

After seeing Grand Designs it looks like a fairly simple job doing one up (I know the one on GD was a complete botched job but). I'd love to do something like doing up a big barge like that

Ooh ... very envious. There is nothing as cool as having a boat to live in (other than a home that doesn't sink).
Have you got any floor plans of how you're going to convert it ?

2nd attempt/3rd..final email
Hello Pete Keys, paddy here. I'm interested in meeting up with regard to your boat 'Island Hope' my plans & offer still stands. Please give me a general idea of days/times that you'd be near to the boats location for showing me around. Such as weekends & I'll arrange with you too meet up, all convenient for you. From Birmingham it's a 3-hour slow drive down so an afternoon would suit me. Some possibly annoying questions, bare with me! I'm interested in gathering as much information & details before driving down from Brum to North-London over next few weeks. Have you managed to get the engine/fuel tank/gear fixed to working order? If not, any quotes from local boat-yards for engine/gear etcetra so the boat can move under it's own power. Can you provide a list of local boat-yards for a new hull-inspection or lifting & transporting long distance for me. I' know I'm listing loads of things off the top of my head, i' cannot afford to cover the mooring fee's in London on my monthly budget. My main idea & enquiry's is to move the boat to Warwick, getting further idea of costings of work once i can provide photo's & general designs of my own. After seeing it in reality. I'll repeat that I'm definitely into a visit & seeing as much documentation of the boat as possible. It'll give me a longer-term view of what question's i' need to ask from boat-yard's near me in Warwick. Documents such as hull inspection/ownership/safety certificate's,..hope i don't seem bossy! ![]() Pete, you are providing me with a great opportunity, so sorry if i come across all scatty. You can just reply to my questions with "you'll have to look into this yourself" its not a problem. As much help with these questions and problems would be appreciated, there's free beer involved at a local pub too you! Faithfully Paddy Last edited by GunZenBomZ; 29-Mar-2007 at 11:06. |

No need for that BBW - constantly attacking Gunz for being Gunz is dumb. Leave him be, if you can't add anything useful, then keep your opinions to yourself.
