Bloodhound SSC Finalised

The team behind the bloodhound SSC which is aiming for 1000mph land speed record have finalised their design. The basic difference is that the rocket engine will now be below the Euro fighter jet engine that will power it.
Nice wee bit on it on the BBC
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8374491.stm

and their main page
http://www.bloodhoundssc.com/

you can sponsor the car should you wish and there is some really meaty techy stuff in some of the blogs or those that want to delve deeper.

For me the really impressive bit so far has been the degree of school involvement, a factor in them getting the engine I believe, and the rate that schools are joining the project.

Also worth a look is the interview that Richard Noble had about the project with Robert Llewellyn on his carpool podcast that you can watch in flash here:

I wonder how much insurance is for that as a commuter car??

holy crap though...the hardest thing is probably to stop it taking off....

Thrust ssc overcame that by litterally forcing itself downward. Bloodhound is taking a smarter approach with a combination of aerodynamics and active controls. I can't wait to see it when he does press te big red rocket button.

this does look more like a rocket car than an upside down aeroplane.
wasn't thrust the tornado engine (ow two) on wheels?

I think they were 2 phantom engines but yeah it was all about brute force. Brute Force kept it on the ground and pushed it to through the sound barrier. Bloodhound is alot more about smart engineering and technology.

I watched /read the BBC article
I love the way that it'll be going so far it might be able to race a eurofighter and the wheels acts as rudders against the extreme speeds
