Cryptocurrency

It's been around for a few years, has anyone dabbled with it as an investment stream?

I'm new to investing in cryptocurrency, but the Wife has done a lot of research and is now egging us on to give it a go as part of an additional investment stream.

After doing some reading we should do the following:

1) Purchase ETH through an exchange.

2) Create a paper wallet using https://ryepdx.github.io/ethaddress.org/#/ for cold storage (USB stick or print the keys out on paper).

3) Take the USB stick or printed keys and store it safe place - we do have access to a bank safe deposit box we can use.

4) Should we need to transfer/sell the purchased ETH use https://jaxx.io/ to transfer or transfer back to the exchange for selling.

Can anyone who has experience in this point out any obvious errors or issues we could face with the above? or things we need to also consider? This is considered as my part of doing some research on it

We are aware of one potential major pitfall, is that there's no capping with Ethereum unlike there is with Bitcoin, which could mean that its value will never hit the dizzying heights of the Bitcoin, or could crash completely. However, the Wife points out as the currency has no real value, the value is defined by the market and therefore the quantity does not define the value - yes yes again another pitfall

No one should be investing in any crypto-currency with money they can't afford to lose.

Yup, fully aware and yes we are prepared/can afford to lose. We're just dabbling and not looking to put all our life savings into it!

From what I've heard, any kind of reasonable selling of crypto has to be done in Bitcoin, and even that can be problematic to find buyers for large values. Etherium is in a massive bubble at the moment, whether it lasts or not we wait to see.

For parts 2 and 3 I would do it slightly different. It's not a good idea to use third-party sites to generate paper wallets as there's no way to tell if they're keeping your private keys for themselves. Only ever use a locally generated key that only you have control over.

A paper wallet is good, but highly inconvenient. Reading private key QR codes is temperamental at best, and typing in the key manually is error-prone. They are great for security and as a backup, but not much else. I'd run a client/wallet locally, dump the private key, and use something like Zint to create a QR code from both the private key and public address. When you print these, make sure you also print the original key in a non-ambiguous monospace font underneath the QR codes, in case you have any difficulty scanning the QR codes. You'll have to do this for every private key you own, and is something that makes paper wallets inconvenient. You'll almost certainly end up with multiple private keys due to change addresses.

Password protect and export your wallet file from your local client/wallet. This can be backed up to a USB stick, preferably encrypted with Bitlocker/veracrypt/LUKS/filevault/etc. Always update this backup after every transaction.

Most importantly, never leave fiat or cryptocurrency on an exchange. The MtGox story should be all the warning you need.

I use uphold. Can transfer money directly from GBP to ETH. I think I invested 200 in ETH and BTC 23 days ago, just before the latest ETH trading bump. That same 100 invested in december 2016 would be worth 1500 now.

All subjective, it doesn't exist until you have it etc. ETH has perfomed crazily well - from ~68/ETH early May -> ~200/ETH today.

Currently mining ETH at 500 dollars a month then converting to BTC

Mate does all the numbers, I just do the hardware, but its making me a bit of extra dosh a month.

Ethereum mining won't be viable at all soon for the average person, as it's switching to proof of stake. What this means is that you'll have to hold a substantial amount of Ether in order to be in with a chance of being allowed to produce the next block. If you currently have the ability to mine successfully, make the most of it while you can.

Also, bitcoin isn't a good investment at the moment. There are multiple possible chain splits coming between the end of the month and the end of September. At the end of it if it all goes tits-up, there could be four different versions of the Bitcoin blockchain, and you'll be shit out of luck if you buy into the wrong chain.

If you've already bought in, you can either cash out now to avoid losses, or hold on until it all sorts itself out. To do this, you need to be the only holder of your private keys. Don't leave anything on an exchange. If you have sole control of your private keys and there is a chain split, you will own coins on all chains. If your coins/keys are held by an exchange, you'll only have coins on whatever chain they decide to follow.

Even the best mining cards are making 5 or less a day with free electricity. Eth is getting harder and harder to mine as it is, and like Tripps said, it's forking soon and will become very hard to do without some investment.

Take your time and research; if you're going to cash out do it before the 21st though. That's the first date when things could start going wrong. There are plenty of later dates that are more significant, but the 21st will be an indicator of how events will play out.

Bitcoin seems to have recovered a touch after quite a drop at the weekend. I think the arse is going to fall out of it before the split.

Yeh, dumped then this am to get some more ETH, which are now in PLR - it is in ICO (for another 9 hours or so), so we will see what happens with that. Probably nothing. But you have to have some skin in the game to make anything.

Pillarproject.io if anyone wants to take a punt.

Some generous white hats also spotted this and drained over double that amount into holding accounts, to be returned. Whether they will or not, but suspect they will.
