Yay, can we just get on with renationalising rail and slowly watching New British Rail turn our railways back into the fucking disaster they were all over again. I genuinely cannot wait.

I don't necessarily think it'll be a disaster (although I'm sure there'd be hiccups along the way), but they should just be honest about what this is - a subsidy for middle class Londoners.

Have we had a transport policy in the last fourty years that wasn't a subsidy for middle class Londoners?

And they are not a disaster now? At least when it was BR you could get a train direct to Edinburgh from Liverpool. Last time I went, I had to change twice.

Well, reducing the Subsidy through private ownership is a start.

On the bright side you can fly there for about twenty quid.

I expect you would always have had to change at least once at Wigan North Western, unless you're going back to a period before Beaching in which case you're a fucking old man, but I'll concede your point on a basis of your age. However, the fact you couldn't bother your arse to travel 25 minutes down the M58 is frankly ludicrous.

Are they a shambles on the scale of British Rail, No they aren't. Are there big problems? Yes. The majority of those are the result of Central Government and policy and frankly the general public inability to understand procurement rules and the way UK Rail is delivered (and I'm no fucking expert)

But to suggest Nationalisation is the way to solve all these problems and deliver a utopian railway is frankly bollocks. All it will cause is more bigger problems in another area or way, and peoples inability to grasp that simple concept pushes me to breaking point.

Does it not ring alarm bells for people that Private Business is able to run commercial airlines [hugely profitably] for 20, but has to charge silly money for train tickets.. do people genuinely believe thats how the world works.

[Added]
I did a quick search on Google and found some accounts for Virgin Trains albeit a couple years old. They reported 31,9 million passenger journeys that year and a profit of 6.80m, a bit of jungle maths would indicate that as 21 pence profit per passenger journey.. now accepting its jungle maths, the number wont be a million miles from accurate.

So how about we begin to look at the problem closely instead of crowing to the RMT and ASLEF quiet little ambitions, and recognise that perhaps Gov.UK is the problem?

Went to Edinburgh twice with my school, 73 and 74, direct from Lime Steet to Waverley station. As far as I know, that was after Beaching?

I'm sure Sir Richard would never fiddle his reported profits for financial reasons.

For all his sharp practices I sincerely doubt he's paying the auditors to falsify the accounts.

You can easily get a train from Liverpool to Edinburgh with a single change. Expecting everywhere to be connected directly to everywhere else is madness.

You don't think for one of the world's richest countries, that every major city should be directly connected? Should have been done years ago.

No I don't. Despite Wigan being a shithole I don't think a 15 mins change over is the end of the world.

This isn't a UK phenomenon, I had to get a train from Dortmund (Germany's 8th largest city) to Frankfurt (5th largest), and had to change at Essen. It's just the reality of managing capacity on a very complicated network.
