To be honest I'm a little surprised that the extensive, and onerous, bribery / corrupt practices / anti-money laundering legislation which exists in the UK and the US isn't being used to investigate FIFA. If the Justice Department got its shit together and started a formal investigation I think we'd start seeing some rapid changes.

The FBI have haven't they? The trouble of course from our pov is that the issue quickly crosses jurisdiction into countries that not only don't give a shit, but think the UK is a cunt.

Well the real pressure point are the commercial sponsors. If the investigation broadened into the liability of these parties in providing funds to FIFA which may have been used improperly then we might actually see some changes to the governance of FIFA.

Mm, it seems that they (FIFA) are looking to re organise their sponsorship structure, from international brand to more local ones. So yeh, it probably won't make a difference, but it's nice to dream.

Your faith in not only the ability but the power of the SFO/FBI/anyone must be higher than mine because that seems like total pie in the sky to me given the structure of those sponsors and where and how any of the money was likely paid out from.

It's not my faith in the competency of the investigators - which I don't have any reason to doubt - but in how widely drawn the legislation is.

I'm by no means an expert but the seriousness with which multinational businesses take these regulations and the amount they spend on being compliant is an indicator of where they see risk. Add to that, that anyone involved can be held criminally responsible for not reporting these matters where they have a reasonable suspicion means that investigators have a lot of tools to get what they want.

Start the leagues earlier , June-July-ish ,rather than August to carve out some time in the Winter , finish them in early June the following year rather than early May if necessary to create some space at the other end ?

I'm banking on some of the big leagues going apeshit over this and refusing to play ball. Should be fun!

Oh I'd say it's probably getting on for double that. Chelsea and City are probably almost 35 between them for example.

[edit] On reflection double is probably a little high, but I'd say a good 90/100 or so?

I counted 23, and I didn't get passed Argentina.

Edit: Thought that was a list of internationals, so mark a few off. But looking at it, most of them in bold are actually international players anyway.

I got to about 80/85, including the odd African/"smaller" European team like Ivory Coast and Serbia, but discounting a lot more, and that's not including England.

107 prem players at the last world cup, 15% of the total.

Presumably a similar spread across La Liga and Serie A.

Annoyingly the article doesn't cite its source so can't check. It does say "Players from the English leagues comfortably outnumber those from every other major European footballing nation at this year's tournament" though. You'd think it'd be between about 15-25% from the two combined leagues though, so let's be conservative and say the three leagues provide 30% of the players.

Gotcha. The top four leagues contributed over 40%.

Yeah ouch. So this exciting debate is basically FIFA vs The Other 2022 bidders and nearly the entirety of commercial football.
