My lads not very happy. Had an e-mail saying his Vive had shipped. He paid £60 for express delivery, so he gave DHL and HTC a ring to find out the delivery date. He was told because the payment was taken by a company called Digital River, they won't be shipping express, and the earliest delivery date is Monday coming.

Mine arrived today, took a while to set up (update the controller firmware via your PC and manually pair them with the headset, they don't tell you that bit)
Otherwise, it's fucking amazing.

I know you have the Oculus dev kits, now you have the Vive, which do you honestly think is the best?

I only have the Oculus DK2 - the Vive pisses all over it in every way. The Oculus CV1 (which I don't have yet) has a similar resolution.
It's the hand controllers that make all the difference, though. Playing VR games with an Xbox controller is pretty much wank. Being able to reach out and interact is so much better.

My lad and his mate in Leeds both got theirs today. Hasn't had a chance to set it up yet. Think this will be me trying to use it.

Lol. Amazing how the most up to date consumer tech then gets used for... a cup and ball game. From the 17th century.

Is it just me that's completely "meh" about VR? I remember the last time they tried it and see this going the same way.

I haven't used it, so it's unfair of me to pass judgement, but I think there's a couple of issues that are going to be very limiting:
- The software that's been released to date seems to be proof of concept rather than fully fledged games. They're amazing things for 15mins in a trade show, but they're all novelty affairs. Someone else said that VR is the sort of kit you wish your friend had, so you could pop round and play it once a month, which seems fair
- Price is exorbitant (which will change) and room scale VR just seems like a massive hassle (which may not change)
- It's going to be incredibly niche for the foreseeable future and so I just don't see developers committing resource to develop software for it

The antisocial nature of it really limits the audience also. It's currently the exact opposite of what made the wii a success.

This is not to say there's a market, us and our tatty office chairs are all in it. It's just small.

So we're kind of relying on Facebook to make it an essential social experience before it will take off then? Bleurgh.

I don't see that as social in a facebook sense of the word, but in appealing to families and groups of gamers who are currently on a sofa with 2-4 joypads you've got to do better than one person sitting there with a helmet on whilst everyone else watches then nod their head around. To that end it's got to be cheaper, less immersive (in the physical sense), lighter, etc. It still feels like AR is the mass market frontrunner a la consoles with full VR being it's niche relative - as PC gaming has been to consoles to date.

I'm still far more interested in the professional/collaborative aspects of the technology. Can the technology ultimately remove the need to have offices with desks in? Virtual offices and virtual meetings would make a real difference to my life, where I can deal with people in 20 different locations over the course of the day.

I'm also interested in the technology for live service monitoring/visualisation and the live visualisation of complex faults - all in a real-time collaborative environment with other subject matter experts.

Can't wait for the first virtual network operations centre to be created in VR either.

Meh.

Overpriced and tbh that vid just looked like a bad attempt at trying to show you can have fun with your mates with it as well. Yeah, watching your mates on the console is loads of fun isn't it - compared with actually joining them in the action...

Yeah that's a fascinating thought. Looking at the feedback on the Large Cinema Mode the resolution still stands in the way of dense displays. Be great once that's lifted up another notch though.

No reason why VR games can't work with multiplayer....as long as you're on separate PCs

VR is going to take viewing someone's holiday snaps to a whole new level of pain.

I'm currently working with a company that's developing facial expression recognition for VR HMDs, so at least one day you'll be able to register your hatred for them in (pseudo) person.

Like I said before. They killed it before it even got going when the Rift came out at the price it did. Low confidence in their product looking to recoup as much money back as possible instead of pricing it cheap enough so take up was big which would have forced developers to speed up their VR content.

I doubt they're making very much at all at that price, even per unit.
