Petrol or diesel ?

I'm thinking of changing cars to a big 4x4 this year or next... Probably a 1 or 2 year old Volvo XC90 R Design. I had planned to get the diesel but all the news about diesels getting hit by tax and bad resale is worrying a bit.. So I'm thinking.. D5 or T6 ??

Leaning towards the D5 as all the reviews say it's quieter and torquier, what would you do ?

EnginePower-------- (bhp)------0-60 mph(secs)---- Fuel Economy(mpg)----Insurance Group-----Road Tax
2.0 D5 Diesel-------221-231----- 7.6------------------48-49 34-38-----------150-450------------4,950
2.0 T6 Petrol---------315 ---------6.3------------------34-40-------------------280-450-----------4,950

I thought they were hitting older more polluting diesels?

They are to start with, all the rumblings seem to hint that diesels aren't the smart purchase anymore.

Considered hybrids? XC90 T8 is a hybrid.

How many miles a year do you do, and what kind of driving?

only 10K a year... Most local, the odd 200 mile round trip to offices & the odd holiday trip. T8's no use to me as I park on the road (shame as I like to idea of it) + it's bloomin expensive and less common 2nd hand.

I have an XC60 D5 AWD and it is a smooth engine with tons of torque, however if I wasn't using it as a towcar I would have gone petrol and 2wd, diesel engines are getting more complicated and with DPF's these days they are full of additional costs as they get older. You probably wouldn't benefit much from the diesel efficiencies if you are only doing 10k miles a year either.

The tide is turning against diesel.

Gov should be bunging incentives to people to switch off diesels.

The general advice seems to be that diesels aren't worth it unless you do 15,000 miles a year or more, and that short runs could lead to DPF problems.
