Filters

  Spoiler: highlight to read
I'm in the market for some filters ... ND grads and maybe 10 stop B&W goodness. Does anyone have any old ones lying around they'd consider flogging ? I vaguely remember Sys had some but don't know if he sold them or not.

If no one does, what's the best ones I should be looking for and how much ?

see what I did there ? ... ND Graduated forum post \o/

I've got a ten-stop I can't use anymore (sold the only lens it fitted onto) so depending on what thread size you need, you might be able to use mine.

I think it's 68mm but don't hold me to it.

52mm is the size I need if its to fit the lens directly (or in a holder etc), although I do have a bigger wide angle, which would be around that size. Popping home at lunchtime so I'll take a look

HiTech are a good brand:-

HiTech

I use them, I would love some Lee filters but they are highly priced but worth it, will sell some more canvas's to purchase some I think.

As for the old Cokin ones I traded them at work for a remote for my 30D sorry, but they are shite anyways and cast a reddish / brown hue on yer images.

You can get cheap step up rings from Vintage cameras . They are Kood ones which are a very budget make but we have a few now and can just about fit any of the filters onto any of the lenses.

We've got some Cokin ND grads you could possibly have but the reason we stopped with them is because they introduce nasty pink colour casts.

Hitech ones are good and will set you back about 45-50 quid for a set of 3 ND grads. Since there's two of us always fighting for the kit we got a set of Lee as well but they are about 50 quid each. In terms of actual difference in quality I've got to say that the Hitech ones seem just as good. The only real advantage of the Lee ones are that they are bigger and so can double up as a plain ND filter as there is enough of the grad bit to slide right over the lens. However, the large size is also a disadvantage for portability - I often wish we'd just doubled up on the Hitech ones.

You can get a cheap Kood filter holder from 7dayshop which is essentially the same as the Cokin P series - they fit the Hitech ones so you don't need to splash out on an expensive holder.

Can't say I've ever noticed a problem with my Cokin ND grads, but then I don't often do landscapes.

Well you can just about do it. I've corrected images by using curves for a particular colour rather than the rgb option that pops up as default. Just like removing general colour casts. If you use a mask as well you can limit the corrections to a particular area, but I think I prefer trying to get it right in camera. When I've done corrections they tend to look a bit "overcooked".

Here is an example using the Cokins

edit: meant to add, an example without any correction made

I can see what you mean ... but converted to b&w, then it'll make little difference. If you're wanting to offload them...

Hi Eth. We have ND grads 1-stop (ND2) and 2-stop (ND4) and a plain ND non-grad 2-stop (ND4). They have seen some use but not a lot. A couple of minor marks but doesn't affect the image as much as the colour-cast

Yours for 250 complete with hard cases.

OK, then 10 including postage for the lot if I'm pushed

PM me with your address if you're interested; we were just about to put them on Ebay.

it's like buses ....

my dad was cleaning out his old stuff, and he's given me a load of cokin 'A' filters and a holder (albeit at 49mm screw thread) ... so now I have the choice of 'A' or 'P' size !

err ... If you mean do the A filters fit into the A holder then yes.

As to whether the P filters fit into the P holder ... hopefully, as the holder (and 52mm and 67mm screwmount) is on order
