Not that jammy! I get kicked out of that desk by the part time accountant twice a week firstly because she knows how to run BACS and secondly because she's a double hard pikey and will duff me up.

That's pretty much correct. The contract states no offshoring for X period of time. During that, it doesn't matter that the companies are US owned, so long as the staff working on it are based in the UK. Even when we have used Indian project managers, we have had to on-shore them.

I never said you were spongers Stuie, but there are basically 2 types of people. Those that blame everyone else/the system/immigrants/etc. for their lot in life and those that take it upon themselves. I've got friends from nice backgrounds who live pretty shit lives who fall into the former....

I've also got friends who are the opposite. One example, 2 lads who's dad fucked off at an early age and whose mum was mental. They got themselves through school whilst also caring for themselves and their mum. Both have good jobs (vocational), one's was a nurse (last time I heard) and the other had worked his way up from being a labourer in a shipyard to aparently living a gifted playboy type existance in the canaries larking about on sailing boats.... It's all about your attitude and whether you grab life by the horns or not. I've never heard either of them moan about their childhood lot in life.

I'm not saying it's easy.

I've only got 5 GCSE's myself. Like other people have mentioned there are agencies. I found myself out of work once and couldn't find a job due to lack of qualifications and a shoddy work history, so I worked through an agency (manpower) and basically took anything that came along. I've done umpteen factory jobs, night work, etc. Jobs that I hated but I needed to do them as my young wife at the time was in college so wasn't bringing in any money (for most of them it was an advantage to not think as they were so mind numbingly boring). Eventually through doing loads of shitty jobs I found an opportunity and went for it. Then another opportunity eventually came up from working hard at the one I'd found, then another, then another. I think I've been lucky, but the important thing is I've made my luck. I know plenty of people who could have had the same breaks but didn't put themselves in the position to realise them.

That's one of the reasons immigrants do often do well, they don;t waste anytime looking for scapegoats for their situation, they just get on and work harder, save harder etc. The ones on benefits are by far the minority.
I'm not blaming everyone else i'm blaming a system we have paid into for years, not by our own choice of course but you plod along in your jobs hoping that somewhere along the line you'll get a promotion or work your way up, you get fired, expect something to fall back on some help from the government/council and just get stiffed. It's hard going into work each day to see scrounging alcoholics, who have shit smeared jeans, come buy cheap lager using money that they can't have earned through a job otherwise they will not be up at 8am in the morning buying lager. I'm just pissed that a system is failing us which we thought we paid tax into incase shit like this happened.

As for imigrants, yes some of them do work real hard, but you know theres a lot who don't and for those who don't and never have, why do they get benefits when we don't? i'm not saying it's not our fault and we're looking for a scapegoat, i'm just pissed because as British citizens we feel forgotten, and believe me we've looked for the past 4 weeks for jobs, theres not many going.

Specifically, what benefits do immigrants get that we don't?

Most of this annecdotal stuff about asylum seekers or immigrants getting benefits, that aren't available to the rest of us, is right wing propaganda.

Sorry your situation sucks and I can understand that you're angry with the system but to blame immigrants or new comers, whatever their description, is just looking for a scapegoat.

And have you signed up to all the agencies (like manpower) ? The job centre is shit, I found it an utter waste of time (as were the local rags)

very true...I work for a local authority...and they get the shitty end of the stick most of the time

free phones? absolute bullshit
free house ?- true but I know we keep the very shittest houses that nobody else wants for them as they dont have a choice and we can claim the cash back from the govt. and most of the time they get hounded out by the neaderthals who live close by, which is why no fecker else wanted to live there in the 1st place
free cash ?- its there for everybody if you can put a claim in

My rant:
Users who don't have a clue about anything, and blindly use applications without using common sense, or seeing beyond a few instructions they've been given.
Case in point with a user yesterday, with me trying to find out some FTP details:
I ask: "What user account do you connect to the FTP site with"
They respond: "It's the ACE FTP shortcut on my desktop. Other than that I'm not sure"
I have someone like that the other week, they were having problems with their emails (nothing to do with me or the company) so I decided to try and help him...

me: "Do you use Outlook?"
him: "No, we have broadband"

When I spent 9 months unemployed last year and claimed dole in the final 3 months, I was amazed at the following:

1) You do not have to prove that you've been looking for work and can make up the three jobs you are supposed to apply for each week

2) The amount they give you is hardly enough to pay the bus fare to get to the job centre in the first place (I walked but you get my point)

3) When I signed off the dole, having got a job, there was no brass band or hearty congratulations from the staff...just a "oh...ok...no need to come back then. Ta Ta"

4) I was taxed on the dole I received once I started earning again.

Item 4 was of particular interest.

Just to further illustrate how little of your tax money goes on paying for social security (2007 numbers).... unemployment is 6% of the Social Protection wedge on the left in greyey brown....

So let's say the percentages stay roughly constant (just for ease), social protection is 27% of total spending, and unemployment is 6% of that. So unemployment is about 1.6% of your tax burden...

Add up all the tax you've ever paid and unemployment is only ~1.6p in every pound you paid. Kinda brings it into perspective how much you've "paid in".

Quote:
Social Protection is the term used in international statistical guidance for the functions
of government relating to the provision of cash benefits and benefits in kind to
categories of individuals defined by needs such as sickness, old age, disability,
unemployment, social exclusion, and so on. In the United Kingdom, Social Protection
comprises personal social services and social security.
http://www.statistics.gov.uk/about/d...nson_cha11.pdf

Which buggers up my numbers a bit (I didn't include personal social services). It's gonna be slightly more than 1.6p.... but close... a little over 12% more than 1.6p I think (I'm no numbers boff). cba to do the sums again....

edit.. hang on... how can it encompass both if they are split in the pie chart, I think I was right the 1st time, 1.6p in a pound (give or take a bit).. That's 1.6p in a pound paid in tax too, not 1.6p in the pound you earn... So say you pay 25% tax, you pay 25p in a pound, 0.4 p of that is paid to unemployment benefit.

Jesus - I should never read public expenditure reports, they wind me up something chronic

Why is the national lottery costing £1.6bn pounds a year? if thats the administerative overhead of the collecting that 5% tax and quangoing out the money to dodgy charities (which is so small as to not have its own category) then its insane. Theres 1.6% off my income tax right there

why does the bbc get £3bn in direct public funding? what are they doing for that - theres another 3% saved

£4.2bn in international development - ah ha ! another 4% of my tax

business regulation department - theres another 3%

food and rural crap - another 3 %

and thats before I start on the real socialist money burners of social security and health....

The lottery expenditure is a wash funded by the good causes component of your lottery ticket. BBC refers to the non licence fee funded expenditure, in particular the World Service and the Monitoring service, both of questionable public worth.
