Putin seems like he's gonna do whatever the fuck he wants and no-one seems to want to stop him.

No one can stop him. Cue more shots of Hague and Kerry telling everyone how jolly cross they are and how they simply will refuse to come round for tea if this isn't resolved instantly.

Stop him so that we can do what we want presumably? The entire issue is one of split allegiance.

Let's have another Crimean War! The last one was so jolly, after all....

A complete simpleton question from over here - one half of Ukraine wants closer ties with Europe, the other half wants closer ties with Russia. Why can't they have closer ties to both?

Cos they're basically gonna end up as a large army base, hence why both sides are being so gung ho about it

Because the attempts by both power blocs to garner influence over the gas pipeline critical Ukraine have completely polarised public opinion by way of a string of utterly corrupt pseudo-sponsored officials. This is not to say that accord would not have been possible prior to last fiddled (allegedly) election, but it's certainly not helped matters.

Russia need to keep piping to Europe and won't allow anything to risk that. It's proven hard enough to keep the Ukrainian administration's mitts off it as it traverses. We'll (the EU) bluster despite cries from help from the europhile opposition in Ukraine because to do anything else means a savage hike in energy costs.

Either way it's going to descend into a militiafest now. I doubt the interim administration has the clout to keep the armed forces on a single mandate.

Like Spaz I have very little knowledge of this so....

Which way will the Ukraine army go? Anyone know much about it's leadership/allegiance?

Is it reasonable to believe that they won't fight the Russian's if it came to it? Isn't all the senior brass going to be USSR loyal still?

Gleeful quote from Kerry there, "You just don't in the 21st-Century behave in 19th-Century fashion by invading another country on completely trumped-up pretext," Mr Kerry told the CBS program Face the Nation."

Putin will continue to do what he wants though, it seems.

Depends how much of a fight Ukraine puts up over Crimea.. Russia has wanted that back for decades and used this as an opportune time to occupy it.

If there is a war it won't be on a global scale, two desperate sides backed by bigger sides involved in political and geographical posturing.

Agreed.

I highly doubt the super powers of the world will be going to blows over Ukraine. I'll expect some come back of "Self declared Russian bullshit, I must protect my people" which will ultimately destroy an economy, split a country in to 3, displace 100's of thousands of people and ruin more world relations.

Not that I agree with the current action it is to a degree better knowing some other fucker has stepped in to sort something out (Rightly or wrongly on a moral scale, no one invades a country with that countries best interest in mind, we did it to the Iraqis and Afghans for our own agenda). Since the Russians are there all you'll be seeing of the UK and US are food supplies.

This is realpolitik Kissinger would have been proud of. Got to admire the incorrigibleness of Putin. Thought the Maidan protests were a victory for democracy, the EU, and the West? Putin's only just anted up.

It's hilarious. We've just about managed to knock a press statement together whilst Putin has mobilised and deployed 25000 troops, 300 aircraft, 40 ships and fifty coachloads of cunts with sticks.

The West will throw its toys out of the pram for a bit - but then leaders will change and Russia will still have the things we need, Putin will still be there, and he will probably have achieved a reasonable geo-political outcome given how things were looking a week or two ago.

It's quite interesting to note that the relatively brief terms of office in Western countries are not the right structure to deal with governments like in Russia or China - who can simply afford to out-wait their political counterparts. It's a significant bargaining advantage.

Very good point. We may have utter arseholes in UK politics, but at least we have a rather better chance for the average UK citizen to vote them out than people in China or Russia.

This is hardly a surprise. Aside from the economics of the Gas Pipelines there's also the fact that Sevastopol is the Russian Navy's only, melting ice caps aside, warm water port (Tartus never really counted and it's not viable at the moment given the state Syria is in). The Russians will not give up on it.

Also I wonder if everyone has forgotten what happened in Georgia already? This could easily go the same way if the Ukraine does something dumb.
