Easy drive for the Mercedes, zero competition in this race. For me a procession of a race, nothing much of note happened beyond failures.

Clearly the Honda is currently garbage, the Renault engine has went backwards as well and doesnt look brilliant. Ferrari / Williams might be the only bit of interesting competition for the next few races.

Awesome Arnie stuff. They should have more podiums like that... seemed to add a bit of levity to proceedings.

As for the race, yeah a bit processional and lacklustre for a season start.

I'm all for strategy / season intrigue, but that race was just boring. Surprised by the amount of unreliability from the existing engine suppliers, Honda kind of expected but Renault in trouble. Ferrari look good, Raikkonen not very racy though. Sauber managed to move the conversation on from GvdG with good speed, Nasr had a very good race.

I'd bet my car on Hamilton wining the championship, outside of driver injury.

Unfortunately for Red Bull, Ferrari are doing okay, so they're going to get nowhere without their support.

Because Horner was so concerned about the spectacle when Red Bull was dicking everyone for four years. Man's a cunt.

Just what I was thinking. Tossing his toys out of the pram as his units aren't as quick/reliable as others.

Whilst I agree (in part) that every team using the same engine may help improve the sport, Horner whining about it now his team is under-performing is pathetic.

What's the point in everyone having the same car? It takes away competition in the teams. Horner can fuck off with that idea.

Whilst I do think it's fairly rich , there is for me a bit of a point. Most seasons RBR were winning they did tend to get some good bits of their cars that were far ahead of others taken out the rules. Plus at least they had 2 or 3 other teams challenging legitimately for wins and in Alonso's case he could easily have won two of those Championships barring minor Ferrari fuck ups.

That aside Mercedes are so stupidly far ahead and given the state of the rules and this engine token nonsense Hamilton really should walk this season. Which will be poor. The Renault has went backwards compared to last year and the Honda is nowhere.

Nasr did well despite him having an irritatingly similar name to Massa I do think there's much more to that story. I remember end of last season they were talking about Sauber seemingly have three drivers signed up so that its ended a drama , not surprised, sounds like a solid fuck up and I expect something more from this!

Still , hoping for a good season, not expecting one at this point though

Red Bull continuously pushed the rules during their mini-dominance.

The competition is between the teams as much as it is the drivers. If there was a budget cap in place on research and development of engines/cars that might be better, but if the Mercedes team can engineer a better racer than the other teams then why not?

Indeed and yeah it's only natural teams do that. But when you do end up a teams total dominance that's still a wee bit shite!

I don't disagree that the point is a valid one, I just don't think RBR had the right to raise it.

F1 is in a real state now. It's trying to appease everyone whilst at the same time continue to offer an entertaining race. Whose to blame? Well everyone in F1 has had a part to play but at the end of the day it's the FIA's responsibility to ensure the sport is in tip top condition and there just isn't enough back bone at the top in there to carry out what needs to be done.

Alan Gow has been the FIA's top man in BTCC for years and has put his foot down when it was required. One example was when the NGTC cars came in as an alternative for teams to use. During it's first season there was a clear margin between the NGTC cars and S2000 spec cars. As a result and by the 4th race, Gow forced the better performing team to use a reduced power output. The reduction hurt them and they lost a couple of races but it wasn't enough to affect the outcome of the championship but was enough to give exciting racing.

The FIA could quite easily enforce a similar thing on Mercedes but I just can't imagine Jean Todt having the balls to do it.

Between Bernie looking to fine Manor F1 for not having enough money, to the German grand prix falling through after the start of the season, the finances of F1 seem shocking at the moment.

I've become a bit blase about the state of F1, but the imbalance in financial revenue between the teams, and the willingness to sacrifice races in countries where viewers live in return for large fees from state-sponsored races running it solely as a marketing exercise, is getting to me. I wasn't too bothered by the adding of the Asian circuit, but Russia and Azerbaijan seem meaningless additions.

I had planned on going to the German GP over the next few years, shame to see it go and I can't see it coming back really.

I'm less worried by the lower number of cars on the grid, I think that will improve, and that in turn will lead to better racing. The dependency on the powerplant you have has become a lot more apparent though. Last year Ferrari / Renault mixed it up with the best-of-the-rest mercedes, but now Renault is behind and Ferrari only supply themselves and Sauber (and Manor) the field is a lot more spread out. If the disparity persists after China or Spain then I think they should look at it.

I just wish they'd relax all the engineering rules and let innovation come back to the car and the power unit.

The rules could be little more than width/length of car, max fuel flow, max fuel total, G limits on the driver, and something about the eco friendliness of fuel.

Would it drive costs up? I'm not sure... what I do know is that it would enable the brain power of an engineer to innovate himself out of a problem within the scope of his budget.

At the moment, the engineers cannot innovate in inexpensive ways. Any innovation, because of the restrictive nature of the rules, is incredibly expensive.

Weather conditions have changed considerably overnight for the weekend's forecast. Should spice things up

also can this thread swap with the F1 2014 thread that's stickied please

Also if I read correctly:
Qualifying starts at 9am (GMT)
Race starts at 8am (BST)

That arsing around by Rosberg means he's now got Vettel to race to that first corner (*chuckle*).
And whilst those two are fighting for position, Lewis will romp away

Quote:
At the end of Mercedes press conference in Sepang on Saturday night, Rosberg decided to ask a question of Hamilton. Standing at the back, the German said: "Nico Rosberg, Mercedes AMG Petronas. There are a lot of comments on Twitter saying Nico blocked you, is that true he blocked you on your second timed lap?"

A smiling Hamilton replied, "I think you should probably ask him, I think he'll have a good opinion on that," to roars of laughter from the journalists present.

Rosberg was not amused. "That's not funny," he said twice, shaking his head.

When he then took the stage, Rosberg was asked if he did block Hamilton. The 29-year-old said: "You best ask Lewis about that. No, it is not even a relevant discussion because we were both on slow-down laps at that point in time. And that was very, very clear."
Except it wasn't clear at all, Nico old fruit.
