Looks like she's off. I don't particularly like the idea of a coronation, but I'm not sure it's much worse than the average Tory Party member making the choice for us.

The rules state that there needs to be a choice of candidates presented to the party.

Who do you wish to represent the Conservative party from October 2016

[] Theresa May
[] Jeremy Corbyn's used Y fronts

Place an X next to the candidate you wish to vote for in pencil so we can rub out all the joke answers.

Great stuff. Need to get May as PM ASAP.

I wonder who we'll see in PMQs this week.

I don't. It'll be a a flustered, badly out of her depth Theresa May failing to answer simple questions on any of her new briefs whilst unconvincingly trying to explain why she doesn't need to call an early GE.

Indeed, May on a sane Brexit platform is getting a horribly high vote percentage in any immediate election

The tories do well in a low, old turnout. A GE this year won't be either in my humble.

It would probably be wise to get some way through the negotiation before calling a GE. Aside from being a useful negotiating tactic it would provide the mandate that was not given in the referendum.

With Labour completely focused in on itself, a GE call must be very tempting for them though.

Turnout in 2015 was the highest since 1997, I'm not sure the tale of Tories benefiting from low turnout necessarily holds up.

I'm not sure the political establishment has much faith in the electorate to do as they are told at the moment. A GE could end up giving power to Norsefire at this rate.

As I understand it, Labour appealed strongly to demos with poor turnout. It's not a flat count that matters. It's an increase in turnout from those groups. Feels like it'd be enough to swing a seat or two at the moment. Between that and some renewed UKIP support it might not feel like the wave-through to May that you're suggesting.

Yeah that's probably right on turnout. I wonder if turnout from young people really will be higher, I doubt Labour are going to campaign on a pro-Remain platform.

My entirely unsupported gut feel is that UKIP will suffer badly from a lack of Farage. I also wonder if we'd really see an increase in turnout from 18-24 after their first engagement with politics didn't go so well.

I also wonder if any small c conservative voters are so utterly horrified by the shitshow the tories have inflicted on the country whilst waving their willies at each other that theyn wouldn't vote for them again if their lives depended on it.

Wasnt the Brexit vote like 65%/35% (I forget the actual numbers) if done on a constituency basis?

There'd definitely be a softening of that if held now but I'm not sure labour or the others could significantly affect that in any GE held now.

So policy then. The "Go Home" van poster thing went ever so well for immigration. Maybe she can extend her imagination to more vans to deal with health and the economy?

"Ill? Go and fucking die."

"Poor? Shut up about it."

She's already made a start at occupying the centre ground on the economy this morning while McDonnell is too busy fighting his own party to point out they're all their ideas...

Indeed she is moving her mouth and making the right words in the correct order which is about as much as you can hope for for any politician at the moment

Enjoyed this:

http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/a54d870e-4...#axzz4E85g7pKv

Quote:
Because Mrs May is the least-bad candidate for the premiership, because any politician short on charisma is assumed to have the offsetting gift of technocratic competence, because a policy as seismic as EU exit is probably best implemented by a doubter, Britain seems to think it is fine now. Financial markets, ravenous for any morsel of certainty, picked up when it became clear that a grown-up was on her way.

This optimism assumes a lot about an inscrutable politician. Mrs May is the most seasoned new prime minister since Jim Callaghan in 1976, and somehow a mystery at the same time. Colleagues know as much about her as a Londoner might know about a neighbour. All we can do is assemble clues and for a liberal voter, or just a pragmatist who thinks a country with 5 per cent unemployment has no screaming need to discard its open economic model, the clues are disconcerting.
